John Hammond was part of the Bop Echoes series Leigh Kamman hosted at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in January 1986. In this snippet from John's presentation he gives a fascinating remembrance of jazz in New York and Harlem in the 1930's including the Apollo, Connie's Inn, the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom and some of the musicians he knew including Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Chick Webb.
