My grand-parents owned John Henry. Sam and Dottie Ruben (Dotsam Stables). It was incredible growing up as a child seeing these races knowing our family was part of it. Seeing the trophy's in their home when we would go visit them. Amazing part of my life. THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading this. It's awesome to be able to show this to my wife and children who did not know my grand-parents let alone John Henry. Thanx again!

For 4-5 years when I was a teen, I was subscribed to the Blood-Horse, and it just so happened that John Henry was IT at the time and was my favorite horse by far, what a champ! You are so lucky to have enjoyed those days up close.

I still have an amazing poster of the photo finish on my wall. I was 6 at the time, and we live in southern WI so Arlington was our track. I remember going before it went up in flames and got rebuilt. John Henry, greatest horse ever in my book!

Great to hear the unique call of the legendary Phil Georgeff. The Channel 9 sports report on the nightly news would usually end with the last 20 seconds or so of that day's feature race at Arlington or Hawthorne....."spinning out of the turn and entering the stretch...." great memories.

@youvenoidea1 That is an incredible compliment coming from someone who has followed racing so long. I grew up watching John Henry race. He belonged to my grand-parents Sam and Dottie Rubin. Thanx so much for your comment. Makes me feel good that he is still remembered so fondly among race & horse fans.

what a great race!john Henry..what a great racehorse.equis magazine did an entire article on him when he was racing and they concluded that his physical build was the prefect racing body.how about that filly royal majesty? she was the only one that could run with him.pretty impressive.thanks for the look back

Core Stone Never previously saw your comments on being the Rubin's grandson. That had to be quite a HUGE thrill to have a horse like John Henry, who was so beloved (and continued to be up until his death and continues to be even years after his death) around. They seem not to make too many horses like him anymore.

John Henry was a remarkable story, especially given where he started (Evangelene Downs in Louisiana) and then in his three year old season at Belmont actually being in for as low as a $25,000 tag (though at that time in 1978, that was a pretty high claiming price) before rolling as he did to become what he would. In case you're unaware, there is also video of John Henry's 1981 Jockey Club Gold Cup where he became the sport's all-time leading money earner on KZbin.
