My mom's family survived the Great Depression on 40 acres in northeastern Arkansas next to Buffalo slough. Every time I hear this song it takes me there and it's 1933, now that's Americana. Grandpa built the house on the 40 acres himself. All that from a 4 minute, 35 second song, all of his music is like that.

I heard this song Live four (count 'em, *four!* ) times on the Perfectly Good Guitar tour, with Mike Ward on guitar. As much as I love Ry Cooder and Sonny Landreth and David Immergluck and some of the other great folks who have played with John over the years, it was one hell of a band he had here, known as The Guilty Dogs ("I did it!) on that tour. This song was fantastic live, and Mike Ward's slide guitar break and solo on "Thank You Girl" was one of the most insane over-the-top phenomenal slide guitar moments I've ever heard. (I have it on tape, as one of the show's was broadcast on local radio and a friend taped it for me). I took my new girlfriend to the 3rd (and fourth) show I attended on that tour, and I think she fell in love with John Hiatt at the same approximate time she was falling in love with me! She has been a huge fan ever since. She tried to get tickets *today* for the upcoming tour of John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett, but all the good seats at the closest theater were already sold out, except for the seats in the nosebleed section. Our old eyes don't work that well at a distance, and anyway the timing would be problematic for her work schedule , so I guess we won't be able to see him this time around. Bummer!

Having owned the cassette (ask your parents) since it was released, I can testify that it IS "mixing up drinks, with mixed feelings". The repetition is intentional, when done right (as it is here) it enhances the meaning. When done wrong (as it so often is) it just sounds clunky.
