I've seen Hiatt twice, only recently at the Moore Theatre in Seattle 2021, and in Edmonds WA in 2022 with Lyle Lovett. Two songwriters on stage talking and playing their songs, while discussing where the root of the songs came from. Hiatt has grown on me, one of the great songwriters of his time. Hiatt lyrics are from the heart, they hit you.

Hiatt has succeeded against the odds of his cartoonish voice thanks to great writing and a natural feel for storytelling in song.

He does have a weird voice, but you oughtta hear Robert "Junior" Lockwood. He had a really weird voice, but he did mighty well on his tunes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWHMln6LpL52ftE

"Cartoonish" voice? Gravelly, yes, but chock full of soul. There's a live recording on KZbin of him doing "I Stood Up" (with Sonny Landreth and the Goners) that has a vocal performance which will knock your socks off. Granted, his voice has lost much of it's former range and power in recent years ---- it happens to virtually every singer eventually ---- but "cartoonish" is best reserved to describe modern, heavily auto-tuned pop-music vocals.

That looks like a Gretsch the lead guitarist is playing; Pete Townshend said in an interview that Joe Walsh gave him a big orange Gretsch as a present; Pete opened the case and thought to himself, "It's ugly, I hate it" ---- until he plugged it in! He ended up using that guitar for most of the Who's Next record.

Guitarist is Doug Lancio; I don't know who the others are off-hand. Definitely NOT the North Mississippi Allstars. I saw JH play with them once; I've seen him many times with various backup, and solo, but it was the only time I've seen him where the backing musicians didn't seem to be up to the job.

@@goodun2974 Thanks, Dude or Dudette. :)
@goodun2974 Жыл бұрын
@@timbryant2259 , it's "Dude" 🙂😁, and you're welcome! The dudette of the household is also a huge John Hiatt fan; I took her to see him play on our 4th or 5th date (it was the Perfectly Good Guitar tour) and she was just blown away. We've seen him many times since. My personal favorites are when he's playing with either Sonny and the Goners or with the Guilty Dogs (Mike Ward and the rest from the Perfectly Good Guitar tour), but his backing bands are almost always top notch. Another highlight was seeing him in a songwriter's circle tour with Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely and Guy Clark. We also saw him play *in a disco* one time ---- on the elevated dance floor! ---- doing duets with bassist Davy Farragher, who you can see playing bass with Hiatt and the Nashville Queens on the KZbin video of them doing the song "Graduated". We were standing right in front of them, about 4' away. I will give you another tip from my wife: of all the shows we've seen together, the other one that is her favorite is blues-rock guitarist Tab Benoit from Louisiana. He is a powerhouse singer and player, and you can find lots of video of him on KZbin including some where he jams with Sonny Landreth.
