I understand the rule but it seems like a recipe for justifying any act for the sake of “I wanted to get home alive”. Always focusing on getting home alive introduces the idea in your mind that any traffic stop could be one’s last, which can make an officer counterphobic and thus they can respond to fear about a threat that doesn’t exist.

It's just a quaint little saying that helps cheer up any LEO after a difficult or less than wholly successful day at work. Such as "Look at the bright side of things." It's not anything to give you carte blanche to do something that would be less than moral or legal.

One of the best touches of this scene is how as it builds in the beginning and just at the moment that John engages the assassins, the music completely drops and it's silent except for the action for the first time you see John at work. It sells it that much more. Everyone involved in this movie REALLY knew what they were doing.

Reeves' training shows how dedicated he was to this character. Is there flair? Absolutely. But there's also those moments of no wasted actions or energy to take out targets.

I wish Jimmy had somehow cameoed in all three movies. Like in the third one, after John kills Ernst, it's revealed Jimmy was also in the library at the time. "Slipped and fell?" "Slipped and fell." Then in the fourth one he's on vacation in France and runs into John again. I know it would have made absolutely no sense, but damn, I would have laughed.

It's amazing how much slower the action is in the first movie compared go 4. John kind of looks like a rusty, retired assassin in this scene. By movie 4, he has fully transformed into his old self, and wouldn't even get his heart rate going against these guys.

Jimmy is a lot more than just "knows". He is a part of the underground criminal system. The "cop" is sent to the house intentionally to avoid uncorrupted cops from showing. He deters the neighbors from further 911 calls and to answer any calls that was given to the house. He is basically there to make sure the cleaning crew gets to the crime scene before anyone else.
