John Knowles Paine (January 9, 1839 - April 25, 1906) was the first American-born composer to achieve fame for large-scale orchestral music.

Didn't even know this existed until it was played at the end of episode 4 of "The Gilded Age." What caught my attention are the similarities between this symphony's third movement Adagio and Mahler's Adagietto from Symphony No. 5. Surely just a coincidence, but there is a three chord progression that sounds just like the beginning of the Adagietto.

That's where I heard it as well. I thought at first that the scherzo sounded much like Dvořák but I knew it wasn't him because I had never heard the piece before.

Beautiful music. I want to enjoy it without having to base it on some episode of whatever show. Paine's music should be shared more often.

I've got to be honest, I'll study to this, but I won't listen to it for enjoyment...The third movement had some nice parts (about a third of the way through), but for me...it was kind of bland.

I think the issue was with the tempo taken for this symphony, something I did was to put the speed to 1.15x
