I agree, it really shouldn't take years, at least in my opinion. My mom and dad knew each other for about 4 months, got married and STAYED married for 50 years, until my dad passed. My mom was 19 when she got married, so the "I'm too young" thing doesn't really fly with me either. It's commitment.

I actually hear this from pretty much all relationship psychologists... men know very quickly if you're "the one." At least from their perspective. I also think of the ancient Bible story: Genesis 29:9-12, 18-20 says: "[9] While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd. [10] When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep. [11] Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud. [12] He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father. [18] Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.” [19] Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” [20] So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her."

@marte1376 Yes, lust is about attraction, spark or falling in love, but in science it is the chemical reaction upon meeting. That lasts about 7 years. Whether someone commits to a long-term relationship is a separate matter, it is about compatibility and working on the relationship between both people. There is no such thing as a soul mate or one person who is the only one for you, it is just a label.

I met my husband through a mutual friend and while I don’t believe in love at first sight or that there’s only one person for everyone, I do think you know when you meet someone you’re highly compatible with or, in some romanticised way, supposed to be with. There was an instant connection and I just knew something would happen, like he’d be significant in my life. He felt the same and said he felt nervous the whole night. He said it was like nothing he’d ever experienced before, like he was drawn to me. We’re still together 11 years later and still very much in love.

So describing the feeling isn’t easy but I do believe it’s possible to just have an instant connection with someone that you can’t explain.
