I think it's worth comparing John to Wes Montgomery for their similar tone. I hadn't put my finger on it until he played strictly octaves but his playing has the deep warmth and succinct articulation that Wes might offer but lacking the harsher attack. He is an inspiration undoubtedly as I sit here playing this at three quarters speed for transcription, thanks Tim for recording this and of course John and his band for this recording.

Trivia note: bassist Jack Hegyi has played with both Loretta Lynn and Mel Torme. And Jim Lawlor on drums likewise is a total pro. Cool little band!
