My girlfriends grandfather had been a set musician on the blues circuit in L.A. in the 30s and 40s and he told me a lot of stories over a cup of wine as he knew that I was a bluesman too. Then one day in I think 1998 he called me up and asked if I could sit in with him and an old friend. You guessed it, when my guitar (Ebony) and I walked in there was John Lee sitting there with a Cheshire cat grin! You could also knocked me off a dog with a Fender! Sorry, Slavic humor. We had a hell of a time and I walked away with the memory of one of the best days of my life!

Some of John Lee Hookers guitar work is underrated in his younger years. It's a diferent sound, country with a diferent tunning, sounds alot like West African instruments. He is not virtuoso for sure, but he was the real deal. When he sang about having no shoes or no food on his table, you know it was for real. He only cared about the way he sounded, and he sounded good.

Actually, it was never determined whether JLH was born in 1912 or 1917. By most accounts, it's recorded that he either died at age 83 or 88. It was a very common thing in the south and other parts to not issue birth certificates or officially record dates of birth for African Americans especially, including the children of sharecroppers, which Sir John Lee Hooker was.

I love a lot of music, classic rock, hip hop, punk, metal, country, and a lot in between but the blues feels like my home. Something I never get tired of. Probably because it feels like it fits my soul the most.

But metal and rock really is just the distortion of blues. Most people who like guitar based rock music will all be partial to blues because those of us who don’t recognise it consciously, recognise it subconsciously. I’m with you though I like some of almost every genre of Music and really everything in music is about opinion so it can be split really into good music, bad music and country music which is of course just a bit worse than bad music

JLH plays the guitar like it’s the easiest thing in the world. Wish I could go in a time machine to 1962, The Gaslight Theatre in NY and see a young Bob Dylan open for him. My 2 favorites
