I get it that you're trying to eliminate the term _Latinx_ from English. Is it the "x" that offends you? Or is it the whole concept of gender-neutral words-something that doesn't exist in Spanish? (Not that English is obligated to follow Spanish grammar rules.) Would you like to suggest an alternative to _"Latinx"?_ Perhaps you're saying that English speakers should go back to using _Latino/Latina?_ That's fine-English evolves constantly, and its speakers drive its evolution. But if that's what you want, then shouldn't you also be saying _"I'm Colombiano"_ (or _"Colombiana",_ depending on your gender)? Why do you say _"Colombian"_ - doesn't _that_ make you fake and pretentious? There was a recent study that showed that only 2% of Latinos in the US use Latinx to refer to themselves. More than half had never even heard the term. The biggest problem with this dumb term is how incompatible it is with the Spanish language. Sure in english it works but not in Spanish. For better or worse our language is inherently gendered. You can’t just swap x for the a or the o, the language becomes jibberish. Example: Todxs lxs mexicanxs son arquitectxs. It just doesn’t work in the native tongue of the people Latinx is trying to cater to. It’s fundamentally challenged and this is why it’ll never catch on.

This video represents an important milestone in the evolution of the English language: *John Leguizamo says **_"Latinx."_* Not to complain against or ridicule the term. Rather, he uses it to refer to people of Latin American heritage, simply and naturally. Without making their gender the focus of discussion. Exactly the purpose for which the term was coined. But, as expected, I can see a lot of people complaining against it. That they're being pandered to by the rabidly anti-woke Republicans tells me all I need to know about what's right and what's wrong. But let me put politics aside and speak to the objectors directly. Is it the _"x"_ that offends you? Or is it the whole concept of gender-neutral words-something that doesn't exist in Spanish and Portuguese? (Not that English is obligated to follow Spanish or Portuguese grammar rules.) Would you like to suggest an alternative to _"Latinx"?_ Perhaps you're saying that English speakers should go back to using _Latino/Latina?_ That's fine-English evolves constantly, and its speakers drive its evolution. But if that's what you want, then shouldn't you also be opposing _Cuban, Mexican, Brazilian, Colombian_ and similar gender-neutral English words? Why aren't you fighting to force English speakers to start saying _Cubano/Cubana, Mexicano/Mexicana, Brasileiro/Brasileira,_ and _Colombiano/Colombiana_ respectively?

​@Salvadoran PolarBear You misunderstood me. I did _not_ say that Spanish and Portuguese languages should change. I'm not asking that Spanish and Portuguese should become gender-neutral. I'm fully aware that in Spanish and Portuguese, everything is gendered-everything is either masculine or feminine, even inanimate objects. That's fine. You have your grammar, and English has its. Sure, there are many gendered languages. But those are not important for this discussion. Here, we're only interested in English, because the term _"Latinx"_ was coined-quite recently-specifically for use in English. You don't have to use it in Spanish or Portuguese or any other language. Adding this word to English is not going to destroy Latin American cultures. What makes you say otherwise? BTW, don't forget that Portuguese-speaking Brazil is included in the terms Latin America / Latinx / Latine / Latino / Latina. You implied that those terms apply only to Spanish-speaking people. Perhaps you're confusing it with _Hispanic?_

For example, my country-India-calls itself _"India"_ in English, but _"Bharat"_ in Indian languages. Another example is Switzerland-it has a different name in each of its official languages. Similarly, China calls itself _"Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó"_ in Mandarin (short form: _"Zhōngguó"),_ but _"People's Republic of China"_ in English. Consequently, it's fine to refer to its people as "Chinese." It's neither wrong nor disrespectful. In English, we already have gender-neutral terms _"Scottish"_ and _"Jewish"_ (or _"Israelite")_ for the respective people. Hence _"ScottishX"_ and _"HebrewX"_ are unnecessary. Note that gendered terms are also available: Scotsman, Scotswoman; Jew, Jewess. I don't know why the US government wanted a collective term for people originating from the Spanish- and Portuguese- speaking parts of the Americas-excluding Canada and the US itself. I agree, they could've just used individual country names. But they didn't. First, they used _"Hispanic"_ in 1980. Then when Brazilian-Americans objected, they introduced _"Latino"_ in 2000. English continued to evolve and get more woke. So a gender-neutral alternative was needed for _"Latino/Latina."_ Yes, they could've used _"Latin American."_ Actually, they do use it. But it's two words, and my guess is, they wanted only one. Hence _"Latinx."_ The _"x"_ signifying that it stands for both _"o"_ and _"a"._ Makes perfect sense to me-but I'm not Latin American. I know that some people use _"Latine"_ - but that makes me giggle because it looks like _latrine._ I'd have suggested _"AxUC"_ - Americas excluding USA and Canada. But they didn't ask me, did they?
