Twist and Shout for it’s time was hard core rock and roll. John and the Beatles belted it out. It was as rough and raw as anything the Kinks or Stones did in 1963. The Beatles just did it better like everything else.

I was a young boy when the Beatles became popular, and the first time I heard Twist and Shout on the radio, I knew I had to have that record. I had never heard any one “scream-sing” like that, and I was totally mesmerized by it. I knew something was different about that whole album because all their voices were different than on the rest of their albums. In the United States, the album was called “Introducing the Beatles,” but I think everywhere else it was “Please Please Me”. Little did I know that John was sick and all of their voices were ragged after George Martin had them sing everything they knew all day long. That whole album was recorded in one day. You would never see such a thing nowadays.

I always assumed Twist and Shout was something the Beatles performed in Hamburg and the Cavern Club. Kudos to George Martin for thinking of that, that's my favorite early Beatle performance videos with the boys doing the Little Richard "whooo" and shaking their now-famous Beatle hairdos. Lennon's criticisms always seemed more personal and don't always reflect on how good a song is. He once said "Yesterday" wasn't about anything while I think there might be a little jealously in that statement.
@pauls50962 жыл бұрын
Perhaps Lennon meant "Yesterday" wasn't based on anything real. The music came to Paul....according to him....in a dream. Paul thought it must have been done by someone else already but it wasn't. When he originally sang it for George Martin he sang "Scrambled eggs."
@harrylazard8052 жыл бұрын
@@pauls5096 I don't know, that's the most recorded song in history and I can't help thinking that bothered Lennon. It seems pretty clear to me what it's about. Lennon wrote "I Am the Walrus" so writing about something "not real" shouldn't have bothered him...
@pauls50962 жыл бұрын
@@harrylazard805Two things about 'Walrus.' 1) John was tripping on LSD when he wrote some of that song and 2) He wrote the lyrics to throw people off. Everyone...including academics...were always trying to find deep meaning in the Beatles' lyrics (Yesterday?) so John threw them a curve ball. So in a sense, Walrus wasn't about nothing. It had a purpose. Also, Lennon's 'Imagine' is still used regularly in films, commercials etc, and is one of the biggest songs of all time so he really had no reason to be jealous. Imagine was huge before Lennon died. What's pretty clear to you about the song's meaning?
@pauls50962 жыл бұрын
@@harrylazard805 You may in fact be on to something. Check out this article written in January 2022. Paul explains how it came to him in a dream and how he put the words together. According to John, he (John) thought the lyrics worked and were good but his gripe was the lyrics never came to a conclusion of the story. Also, from the article: "McCartney told the BBC: "The worst thing for John, was that he didn’t write Yesterday, I did. And he would get really quite biffed because you would be in New York and the pianist would go and hum the song. That would annoy him." And another friend of Lennon went on to confirm the star's frustration as well. Journalist Howard Smith said of the song: "Yesterday drove him crazy. People would say: ‘Thank you for writing Yesterday, I got married to it, what a beautiful song.’ He was always civil. But it drove him nuts." www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/1555813/john-lennon-paul-mccartney-the-beatles-yesterday
