My mom and I were coming home from KMart after getting some Christmas shopping done (they stayed open late for Christmas Eve), and heard it on the radio. I was just 10. This was, as you, just three years after Elvis died, which I also remember. It definitely taught me early on that money, fame and all that, didn't matter--everyone dies. May they rest in peace.

Lennon had such strong trauma from his childhood and it bled over to his adulthood. He often times allowed people who didn’t have his best interest to make decisions for him, I wish he could have seen that the one who really loved him as a person, as a friend and as a collaborator was Paul. At least they made up a bit before Lennon’s untimely death.

Dearest Paul, you were more than friends with John. Your connection was spiritually deep. Your co-written songs were musically telepathic. Your initial meeting was written in the stars and still shines on today. The top and bottom of it all is you gave the world such magical melodies and lyrics, never to be repeated by others. John loved you so much and it was reciprocal. His love for you did not die. I truly believe that. Love transcends death. As for me, well, I love you both and have done since I was a twelve year old schoolgirl in 1962. Thanks for the incredible memories. I feel blessed to have been born into your era. ❤❤❤

Amazing how he's changed especially Beatle's songwriting contributions to suit the fact that Lennon's song's now hands-down get all the attention. In 1978 he did a very in-depth interview on his and John's contributions to each other's songs. He said he helped John on 3 of his songs. Now magically it seems that Paul wrote all the music and performed at least half of it himself. As Lennon said "Paul is a very good PR man". Indeed.

They were the first. Broke so many frontiers in rock and roll. And now music is diabolical, rammed down kid’s necks by corporate labels. Classical music written hundreds of years ago is still played. The Beatles songs will still be played in 2200. NOTHING written in the last 15-20 years will be played beyond a decade. People aren’t stupid, they recognize these facts. The tricky thing is changing the tides. Keep the faith.

John and Paul were soulmates and suddenly John found his new soulmate, Yoko. That, together with his serious drug problems and the illnesses and mental problems that he surely suffered from, was what caused their relationship to be like this during the 70s. In parallel, Paul was a very sensible, healthy and family-oriented man. This shows that geniuses can be very different, even when they are practically brothers.

Paul and the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show on CBS in 1963. They were just a little older than me, and they were role models. Later, we all found out that the celebrity given to classic rock musicians was usually misplaced. Most were creative aholes. They were not worthy of respect beyond their music. Paul McCartney has always been fun, creative and thoughtful of other people's feelings. I still respect him as a man and a human being.

Paul here: "A lot of bravado in what John said ..." Keith Richards, "John had a front as big as Harrods." Interesting insights from guys who knew Lennon back when. But, what got John killed was that he was so down to earth, when that psycho asked him for an autograph, John was probably taking the time to put his trademark smiley face on it. Really sad.

I think John wanted to be the man but Paul really was the man or became the leader. And it’s hard. But there was a lot of love between them. It’s like with any relationship with an ex etc. It’s hard to go back. You sort of move on. But they both gave so much to the world. And they did it together. I remember looking at song credits and lyrics on the old albums and so many times it sad Lennon/McCartney. And I don’t know why but that always made me feel good. Teamwork truly does make the dream work. Corny but true. Peace be with John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Nobody I don’t believe in history ever had the unique influence they had in their time.

AkashaMedea777; I have always said that Paul and John didn’t meet by chance. John didn’t just happen to decide to ask Paul’s mate, a kid that was really too young, to join his group because he was good on guitar. And they didn’t just happen to get to know the drummer for Rory Storm who sat in for Pete and when he played everything sounded SO much better! There’s no such thing as coincidence. These four became a unit by providence. It was planned. God’s hand guided it. That’s why there has never been, and will never be, another group to turn the music world upside down. And how blessed were we that lived it all in real time.

Paul is a very nice man, very warm and friendly, he never turned his back on his children, he even took care of Julian. John was very self-centered and talked about peace, but meanwhile he was a bad father to his first son and unforgivable to Paul, whom he blamed for arranging financial affairs behind the Beatles' backs. He was very harsh and would not forgive Paul. That. Paul visited regularly, but John always closed the door, which caused Paul great pain, his wife Linda always accompanied Paul on these visits. It's nice to hear Paul say that at some point they were talking again, but that took a long time! May Pang played a role in this, during the 18 months she lived with John she suggested they meet again, during that time John and Paul were also in the studio together again and John went out to see other celebrities, such as Mick Jagger, he also saw Julian regularly again. But back with Yoko he became a househusband and hardly saw people anymore.

Everyone talks about John's relationship with Julian but you have to understand that John didn't have a father in his life. He rarely saw his father who was a merchant seaman. His parents were never married. He last saw his father when he was 5 years old and never after that. From that age on he grew up living with his Aunt Mimi and his uncle. He had no clue at all how to be a father. He also had a lot of anger built up in him from basically being abandoned by his parents. That anger spilled over into his relationships when he was younger. He had a somewhat tempestuous relationship with Cynthia, his girlfriend and only married her after finding out she was pregnant. Julian was born in 1963. He was married at a registry office and then he had to go perform that night. When Julian was born he was on tour and didn't see him until 3 days later. The 4 years until he and Cynthia divorced were like a whirl wind for the Beatles. Constant touring and recording through 1966. How much time he spent with Julian who knows. But Julian was only 4 years old when his parents split up. And then after that it was difficult for John to even see Julian. So their relationship was haphazard and strained at best. It wasn't until Sean was born that Lennon became a real father.

There is no doubt the McCartney knew Lennon pretty darn well. I think most of the stuff said here is accurate. In the end they were childhood type of friends that became enormously famous for all of us to enjoy. John was gunned down. Not fair at all. It ends in 1981 because of that creep.

John's early death had to be a nightmare for Paul since both of their vocals made the Beatles. Up until Yoko came along and even destroyed that by ending and breaking up the group too soon. You could tell back then she only cared about the money NOT the music.

@@Jack_br3w I think your right. Having lived during the 60's as a young boy listing to music, those really were the best years for music by far than anything that came after. Great bands actually made all that happen for the first time during both the 50s and the 60s.

@@Jack_br3w I don't hate her. Not a fan but hate is a strong word. John clearly loved her and that's what matters. She should not have been in the studio when they were trying to work. Unfair to the others. She wasn't solely responsible for the group breakup. I believe that they had disagreements over business and management and lawyers with Paul wanting to go one way and the others not wanting to do that. I also believe that their best was well behind them. From Sgt. Pepper on they were winging it with some really great tracks on albums lost in a a load of rubbish like the White Album. Loved the 1961-1966 stuff and some of the later songs but really, they had run their course. I doubt they'd be as popular as they are today had they continued and just fizzled out after a few more years.

I think we all have a "John Lennon" in us, the difference is that some of us keep it to just thinking of saying something, John wasn't like that. John grew up under Yoko's guidance because she didn't put up with his attitude and that was exactly what John needed and loved. I had the same experience with my late wife. She explained things to me in a manner I finally understood, the same thing might have been the case with John and Yoko and he loved her more and more for it.

Youll notice when George died, Paul had a reaction that was commensurate with the loss. He had time in that case. Kinda unfair to hold the “ drag” thing against Paul. He seems to have had some residual guilt, but he’s in a situation where every move is judged in real time. Hes had to live like that since age 21. Strange much?

I was 10 when John Lennon was killed. I remember it was one of the few times my Dad was home from work, because my Mom was watching the news, I was doing homework at the table, and suddenly she goes, “Oh my God! Honey! Honey!” Dad came running out of the bedroom, “What? What?” “Someone killed John Lennon!” I asked, “Who’s John Lennon?” Dad said, “He was one of the Beatles!” “Who are the Beatles?” Dad just put a record on, and we listened to the Beatles and John Lennon for the rest of the night. That was when I really knew who they were, and when I realized how much their music affected me. I knew who Elvis Presley had been, because they always listened to Elvis. But, the Beatles…I knew their songs, but I didn’t know THEM until that night.

Yep…Many Beatles fans and JL fans would find it very hard to actually come to terms that PM was actually the leader and founder of the Beatles, he seeked John out not the other way around. And the start of the Beatles was really when Paul and George met in school..Paul actually brought the Beatles together..but he never connects those dots in public because he knows the JL Fans would have a fit, but when you look at the facts they can’t be refuted. And not to mention How Paul keep the group together after Brian Epstein passing.

Obviously it would have been great if they did decided while John was still alive to record again, but I like the fact that they didn’t because it just didn’t feel right. Sometimes it’s just better as fans to accept their decision and not be greedy just because it’s what WE want.
