Just hearing Lennon's voice on early takes, it comes through how talented a vocalist he was. His singing voice was 'butta'! It was smooth, it could be delicate, the man's vocal range was WIDE. John was so accomplished, even this small and, not even trying, example gives a little glimpse into his singing GREATNESS. He had the ability to masterfully add superb inflection, as well as tonal changes to lyrics - effortlessly! This man was genius²!

Yeah it's a shame he was self conscious about his singing voice, often using reverb/echo or a double track, he sounds even better as is.

I love hearing songs in development. Any songwriter will tell you that no song starts out as a masterpiece - the true art of the songwriter is knowing which bits are good, which bits need work and which bits to throw out. Lennon was very good at that. When he worked with McCartney you not only had two incredibly creative minds with endless ideas, but the two of them combined had the best filter - they knew exactly what to let through and what to put in the bin.

I bought the John Lennon Anthology 4-CD set in the late '90s. This full opening demo should have been on it.

The Bass guitar is way too "busy" musically & percussive for it to be Klaus Voormann here. Klaus Voormann's bass playing was always pretty basic and understated. This sounds like somebody else handling the bass part here (maybe Gordon Edwards who played on The "Mind Games" Album -?)

I agree. Too many notes to be Voormann.

it is Klaus. with the rerelease of 'Mind Games', he was interviewed again recently and said that they started off slowly but it ended up a bit crazy once people started sniffing in the bathroom. he said that even Keltner told him he was doing a bit much lol

Klaus Voorman best German artist 🎨 and bass player all the way ❤
@quazwasd40623 ай бұрын
Nope, it's definitely Voormann. He himself thought it was too busy but Lennon and whoever else was mixing it liked it and it was kept.

Sometimes I would rather hear the demos and early takes I could listen to John play guitar he's not bad all those year of playing rithem. I don't understand why he thought he was no good at guitar he could hold it down just fine
