This was Lennon's only solo no.1 single in the U.S.during his lifetime.

This song is actually a duet with Elton John but Elton did not care about the credits. He and John Lennon were actually friends and made a bet on wether the song would hit #1. Elton won that bet and as a result, John had to pay up by performing the song live with Elton on stage, his first appearance in concert since the Beatles broke up!😮😊. This live performance with John and Elton can be found on KZbin.

Whenever I see something like 'ultimate mix 2020' attached to a song I get a little scared as to what they did to this song. I recently listened to the Ed Stasium mix of the classic album "Tim" by one of my favorite bands The Replacements. I like what he did with it, but I've been hearing some dissenting opinions on that, but, for me, the album that I first heard back in 1985 was still there, as is the case with 'Whatever gets you thru the Night' here. This is from the album "Walls and Bridges" which also contains one of my favorite John solo tracks '#9 Dream. Thanks for the upload.

Great upbeat song! The Beatles were an impossible act for the guys to follow with their solo careers but they still produced plenty of great tunes. Some of John's that spring to mind are: - Working Class hero, #9 Dream, Mind Games, Instant Karma, Beautiful boy. Cheers.

John’s last live appearance…. November 29 1974….and Elton also recorded Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds which was a hit for Elton….. and thanks for pronouncing my name correctly….👍🇦🇺.

I remember this quite well. Never cared for it until news of Lennon's assassination came in. Suddenly his worked became important to me. I've been to New York a few times in the 80's, 90's and 2000's. Wasn't quite the same after 911. I feel like I have asked for this song in the past, but Gillian and I are keen to see a reaction for Phil Seymour - Precious To Me (Friday night in the video room). Phil Seymour was an American one hit wonder. Us Countdown kids pushed his song into the Australian Top 20. I feel we probably should ask for a reaction to some international songs that only got to be hits in Australia due to the power of the Countdown kids. The song was also a hit in America, but again.. it was us that got it into the Australian singles charts. Perhaps mention that in your intro. Phil Seymour - Precious To Me (Friday night in the video room) Cheers, Hayley

I'll echo thd countdown kid & request Precious To Me by Phil Seymour. Phil was in the Dwight Twilley Band who had an excellent hit called I'm On Fire which is classic power pop.

Not one of my favourite songs by, John Lennon, but still a good song. A couple of my favourites of his, "Jealous Guy" which was covered well by 'Roxy Music', and "She's Leaving Home" ('The Beatles') which was covered by 'Bryan Ferry' funnily enough, perhaps suitable for a future Wednesday?

My favorite Lennon solo song. The story goes that Lennon was a little miffed that he hadn’t had a number one hit as a solo artist. Elton John who did this song with him, guaranteed that it would go to number one and it did. You should do Be My Yoko Ono by Barenaked Ladies. Hilarious song.

When I (Chris) was in a cover band in the early 90's, we covered Be My Yoko Ono when we discovered that all of us band mates could harmonize. The Barenaked Ladies were huge here.

In an unrelated topic: Since you like doing "comparison" videos how 'bout comparing Archie Bell's 1968 single "there's gonna be a showdown" with the New York Dolls' 1874 cover? Archie Bell is remembered for his '68 hit "tighten up"- which isn't really a song; it's him MCing a dance contest. (Don't know why that was his only massive hit- he did have MUCH better 45s than that!) The Dolls need NO introduction!

There’s no question I lean more toward the McCartney end of the famous writing partnership and it’s probably contentious to say but by the time 71 was over John for me was done as a hit maker, in fact he was overshadowed by Paul those last 2 years in The Beatles writing and focus wise . I was already familiar with this but it didn’t register at the time with me and nothings changed 50 years later imho 🤷♂️ 👍🏴
@Starburst_Candy9 ай бұрын
In terms of quality, McCartney was leagues ahead of Lennon. That is also true of George Harrison who wrote much better songs than Lennon. Lennon's songs to me, were all about chucking his toys out of his pram.

@@Starburst_Candy in my view Starburst he just ran out of ideas once Yoko came along - just checked out n was mailing it in for those last 2 years . No question he was the dominant writer in the early years , but from Sgt Pepper onwards that flipped .. imho ✊ ( Btw - Col n Sir G have been boring me about their spanner collections and amusing Swarfega tales on a thread I started , they don’t listen to me , could you have a word please ? 😝- they won’t know I’ve grassed them as I’ve put this part in brackets , so it’s all good ! 😂😂) .. yes I agree McCartney was the better overall songwriter 👌 👍🏴
