“Nobody is documenting this history.” That just hit me. Class act Shawn. You’re 100% correct. With these men and women that you’re interviewing, you’re documenting their story. You’re doing what Stephen Ambrose did for the men of Easy Co in Band of Brothers.

Has there been an issue about “chest pounding war stories”? I’ve watched almost every episode and never once assumed that was going on. Being a civilian I enjoy but respect the war stories. @@chrisleftrick1593a lot of veterans use war stories to puff their chests out. It's a nasty trait in people who make "I deployed" their entire personality when they get out. Often embellished, sometimes entirely fabricated. Even while active duty. You will always run into NCOs who just tell stories all day to the new joes who've never deployed before. They use it as a status symbol, especially now that the GWOT is over.

@@danieldymes6867 I know I've heard other people talk about how it all blends together, and the only way I can imagine someone would be able to remember the exact dates and locations would be to keep a journal. And as far as what happened, I'm sure a lot of it runs together, so there would be moments here and there that stand out, but overall, feel a alot like one big jumble. Keep in mind, he was constantly on the move. Its not like he had much down time to separate one thing from another mentally. I've listened to quite a few of the interviews Shawn has done with many different people, as well ask Jocko's interviews with different people, and the only ones that describe a tempo like John Lovell experienced were from the Vietnam SOG.

The unpredictability of what America might do was gifted you by these gents and your opinion on their service changes exactly zero about that fact.

I’ve watched a lot of warrior poet content and he never came across as someone who’s bragged about his past accomplishments or experiences. The most credible people just simply are who they say they are or are those that just do as they do. Great interview, love both these men.

A lot of top operators don’t talk about their history except with other operators and definitely not on a camera. That’s what makes what Shawn does so great. When he says this history isn’t being documented he’s right. Comparing those who do tell their story are outweighed by a ton of the ones who don’t. Some feel like one shouldn’t at all but like you I’m glad this show and others similar exist

As a civilian, what I have really appreciated about this show is that the history that is being documented is from first person perspectives. In a world with so many controlled narratives in the media, it's hard to know what actually happened. Getting to hear the accounts from people that were actually there is utterly fascinating. It has helped me gather a better understanding of the situation the world is in and what has led to its current state.

Being someone who isn't proud of parts of my growing up, I get where John's coming from, but It takes a humble man to share his mistakes and how he learned from them. It also makes us more relatable to people who are maybe going through some stuff and give them hope. And the most important thing is that the Atonement of Christ covers it. John clearly repented and turned around and so now it doesn't matter. If anything I respect John even more now having learned about his background. Repentance should be a daily thing. If you are reading this and you're struggling just know three things. 1. God lives. 2. He knows you and loves you. 3. He's waiting for you with open arms whenever you're ready. I've been there. I know what I'm talking about and the change is so good.

I do tree work. What John is talking about at 38:00 about how stress wears you out and isn't needed to do your job took me a long time to learn. As I gained experience and doing my job became second nature, I eventually realized the impact stress was having on me and how unnecessary it was for getting my job done. I eventually learned that cool, calm, and collected was the best way to accomplish what we were doing, it prevented mistakes that would make everything much harder and take a lot longer. Its amazing how much of what both of you talk about is directly applicable to civilian life, and is one of the reasons I deeply appreciate what you guys are doing. Good role models are not something everyone has when growing up, and the interviews you do, and the material you guys produce gives that to some people who never had it. I seriously believe that a large part of the gender identity stuff we have going on is due to the lack of good role models, men for others to look up to who embody the strong protector and the caring man together. It seems that it has been so lacking that an unfortunate number of people don't know that you can be strong and caring, it doesn't have to be one or the other. Maybe I'm wrong, this is what makes sense to me based on what i've seen in general.

Fantastic guest, as usual. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought "Fruity Rudy?!?!" - close resemblance! (I get it, wrong branch). It amazes me what the American soldier can accomplish with the right motivation, training, equipment, and support - world-class professionals who can seemingly do anything and fight anyone. Proud to be represented overseas by these brave men.

John, when you were speaking about what you could and could not say during your first sat-phone-call home, you brought back an old memory for me from my time on the USS Coral Sea in Vietnam..... Supposedly, all of our letters being mailed home were opened and read. Makes me wonder how many of my letters were never delivered? I am enjoying listening to you fellas and I appreciate you both.
