I remember watching all of John's videos from Amsterdam like 7 years ago, and now I'm studying abroad in Amsterdam and learning Dutch and eating bitterballen and hagelslag. When I tell people that I chose to study here partially because of John Green, they roll their eyes because TFIOS took over the world and is probably many Americans' only association with Amsterdam, along with weed. But really, I watched John's Tulipomania video, then read Tulipmania the book, then learned as much as I could about the Netherlands and fell in love. I just want to say thank you to John for getting me interested in such a cool place.

I've just bought Looking for Alaska in Norwegian. It is called "Hvem er du, Alaska?", literally: "Who are you, Alaska?", which makes me wonder, who is responsible for choosing a title if the original title doesn't translate? Norwegian is my second language, so we'll see how it goes. :D

Funnier in Dutch? I beg to differ... I absolutely love his books but in my opinion the magic of it kind of disappears when it's translated to Dutch. I can't really explain it but if you speak Dutch, here's an example: I do Augustus, I do - Reken maar Augustus, reken maar. or My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations - Mijn gedachten zijn sterren die ik niet tot sterrenstelsels kan vormen. It's hard to explain but the translations make me cringe, eventhough there's probably no other way to translate it. Maybe I just love the English language too much ;)

Yeah, I agree that almost everything in Dutch sounds stupid. But what's really funny though is when you talk Dutch to a foreigner, only a few words like in the video with hagelslag, there's this awkward silence in which that person goes like 'how can you do that with your mouth...'

Quoting "David after Dentist" = awesome. Also, the Dutch dish whose name I will never be able to spell (the one composed of white bread and chocolate) is actually fairly common in several countries. I saw it becoming popular in the United Arab Emirates a few years ago. It's actually vaguely familiar to the concept of "Nutella", which, if you haven't tried, you should.

I lived in Holland for 7 years, my family still lives there and I love it! I never learnt the language however, because: 1) Everyone in Holland speaks English amazingly well. 2) I went to British school and spoke English every day though we did have Dutch language lessons...3) I am lazy. I dropped the subject in Year 9 (Eighth Grade). I wish I could have come to see you and have my books signed, but sadly I'm not visiting Holland again until May. :( I hope you had an awesome time!

Hagelslag is just the beginning of the Dutch bread eating experience. We have hagelslag in white, milk, pure and extra pure chocolate (or mixed), chocolate flakes in the same variaties, fruit sprinkles, the best peanut butter ever (which combines greatly with the aforementioned hagelslag), ginger cookie sprinkles, and much more.

For a very long time now, lots of countries have toast with melted butter and something chocolate (oftentimes powdered chocolate mix such as Nestle Quik) sprinkled on it. Especially many poorer countries, where all of the above ingredients are not very expensive, but put all together like that is YUMMY.
