MacArthur is a real blessing. I grew up Catholic, catholic schools, great alterboy, etc. What a mission field we have. I'm rather fond of Luke 1:46-47 when Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,..." Thus admitting that she herself was a sinner and in need of a savior. IOW, we only need The Savior if we're a sinner and Mary clearly understood this. Mary was a woman of honor but still a sinner in need of a savior. Just like every last human being.

Revelations 18-8! I was raised a catholic. The bible was in latin, our prayers were to mary, the mother of GOD. I went to confession on Saterday, I made up sins to confess. I prayed to mary the mother of GOD, I was 14 years old when I REALISED this is so wrong and I quit the Catholic church, I was given a bible when I was in my early 30's. I study the words daily and love and trust our lord GOD ALMIGHTY. The word of GOD is food for the soul!

Coming out of catholicism: at 11 while in church for penance I had gone every week. That Saturday I couldn't think of a sin. The priest said I couldn't receive absolution. I got up from kneeler and said ' I don't need you' only Jesus can forgive me' I don't need you " he chased me out of church.

Had a church leader visit me a couple of times, per the boarder we had. Would be sitting on the front deck outside. Was willing to talk to him. But, he got oddly belligerent when I wouldn't confess my sins to him so I could be forgiven. I said, I pray directly to Jesus for forgiveness. Through no one else, through no man. Seemed he did not like that. The conversation became very uncomfortable. He was..angry. Haughty. Didn't feel right. At all. He said other things that sounded totally unbiblical. But it was his..impatience and visible anger that made me uncomfortable. In my head I'm praying..Lord, if this man is not of you..please guide him away. And so He did. And he never returned.

Being the son of Sicilian immigrants, I grew up Roman Catholic and was Catholic until my mid-thirties. By God's grace, I was invited to a Christian home Bible study group, and after a long and stubborn struggle and lots of reading of scripture, I finally saw the errors of that faith and I became a bible believing Christian. While in the service, I was asked by a coworker and friend to attend Catholic Mass with them on Sunday. I was raised-up in the Missionary Baptist Church, and was interested in what I might hear and see. Understand, this was in the early eighties, and being a farm boy from Alabama, I had no idea of what I was about to behold. Less than five minutes in, I knew I had made a poor choice to attend. I had never been so uneasy in my entire life, and clearly did not belong there.

The liturgy is probably what made you uncomfortable? The ones who are familiar with it signing chanting and kneeling on cue can make newbies feel out of place/lost. Once you know it you know it and those feelings go away. Your friends should have helped you go along with the service which is very much ritual and repetition based.

@@antonmeyer7369 I was listening to John MacArthur with great interest in his preaching. John's preaching lead me to question the Catholic faith that I was raised with. I also got a book written by a Catholic priest to compare to the bible as well, so I was being completely fair and thorough. John MacArthur's teaching was line by line through the Bible, and very deep. I loved it. Very deep. John started a study on the Gospel of John. I was excited because, "finally, someone will destroy the teachings of the Holy Eucharist." And then I would be out of the Catholic church. John gets to the 6th chapter, goes through line by line, of the feeding of the 5000. Then John states, 'This is where the Catholics get their idea of Holy Eucharist. Obviously it is a bunch of huey and full of bologna, because if you go to verse...' And John skips to something like verse 63. He changed his presentation style, he skipped over 25 verses and then went backwards. That was not how he approached any other verses. I was beside myself. He cant do that!! I wrote him a letter (1990s) and asked John to explain that part better. He asked me to buy a book called, 'The Gospel according to Rome." I was raising a family and had no extra money, but I bought the book. Guess what, it skips the same verses. Well then the Catholic priest had a chance to explain those verses. He was not afraid of those verses. All John MacArthur had to do was go through those verses line by line and I would have left the Catholic Church. But he never did and the book he referred me to did not either. God Bless And when we are ask to have complete faith in Jesus in all He said, that means having faith in the exact things He said in John 6. The Holy Eucharist is His Body and Blood, just as He said.

Then please explain why ALL Bible believing people receive their rule of faith, the Bible, from her… History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, not only did they not agree but their list of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time. So, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us, show us, who did? And if this church no longer exists today, what good is the text which came forth from her if she couldn't sustain herself?

@@derekcho2312 Great questions… The “church” never burned anyone, unfortunately some bad zealous Catholics certainly did. Equally unfortunate, pope Alexander VI. Maybe not the worst pope in history but certainly at the top. Reigning from noble Borgia family, he is as known for having many mistresses and several children. Besides breaking his vows of celibacy, Alexander VI’s name became synonymous with nepotism. To “explain” these behaviors is simply to say its - egregious, deplorable, criminal, just plan wrong. There is no excuses for these and the many other acts other Catholics in history have done. We are a sinful people - we are a church made up of sinners - we all are. My own child is among some of this kind of behavioral problems but they/we are still all God’s people that need His mercy and love. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I hope this helps-

I was born Catholic because my mother was Polish and my father was Spanish. At the age of 12, 😂 realized, while in church, that the Catholic church could not tell me if I was saved. I did not come back to church until I was 23 and moved to Arkansas and was led to faith by a faithful couple- USING THE BIBLE. I am very glad that John did this series. I don't want anyone to be Catholic and I share that freely. I am going to try to write down ALL his sermons in this series so I can share it with my daughter and son in law. Let's stop cherry picking Sacred Scripture. 1 Tim 2 first calls Christians to mediate in prayer to God for other people. "First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone- for kings and all those in authority-so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all-the testimony that was given at just the right time. 7For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles." On the day of His Resurrection, He commissioned His Church to either forgive sin or hold sin bound (John 20:19-23). St. Paul excommunicated by authoritative letter at least three men for their mortal sins (sexual and blasphemy).

Thank you for your teaching. As a six year old little girl, I was told by the eighth grade girls teaching the ccd class, protestants did not go to Heaven. My mom's mom was protestant. Reading the Our Father off one of her planters that ended with for thyne is the power the Kingdom and the glory now and forever. I asked my mom why grandma's prayer was different than what we said in church. Grandma looked at my mom. Suddenly, without a word, I believe it to be the Holy Spirit, knew God loved my grandma. I knew her to love Jesus and believe I will see her in Heaven.

Also, Scripture tells us that we have only one foundation, Jesus Christ (1 Cor 3:11); but, Scripture tells us that there is more than one foundation (Eph 2:19-20). Scripture tells us that we have only Lord, Jesus Christ (Eph 4:4-5); but, Scripture tells us there is more than one lord (Rev 19:16). Scripture tells us that we have only one Judge, Jesus Christ (James 4:12); but, Scripture tells us there is more than one judge (1 Cor 6:2). Contradictions in Scripture? No! Not when these passages are all properly understood in context. Jesus is the only foundation; Jesus is the only Lord; and Jesus is the only Judge. But, we are members of Jesus' Body. Therefore, we are able, according to the graces given by Christ, to share in Jesus' role as foundation, as lord, and as judge, and in other aspects of Christ, as well. Another example, as a father I share in God's role as Father, by His grace. And, so also, we, and the saints in Heaven, and the angels in Heaven, can share in Christ's role as Mediator.

​And here we go. Addressing those saying Baptism or anything else is required. I'm sorry you've been taught this, then used Acts to proof-text it. But many do this a lot with error. We see this with the prosperity gospel, etc. Plenty of examples in the NT where Baptism is specified as not being essential (beyond the thief of the cross). Those that push these beliefs - think of what your faith is ACTUALLY in...Baptism, not in Christ. With that said, I've been baptized as have the vast majority of Christians but we know this is just an outward extension of our faith not THE object of our faith. I get it, you're Church of Christ or Adventist. But like John is saying, the entirety of scripture is what most are looking at, not simply proof-texting which isn't proof at all. Read what Paul stated about baptism in Corinthians after stating he was glad he baptized so few of them. He went on to say he was not sent to baptize but to preach the gospel. Now, let that sink in. If Baptism was part of the plan of salvation or the gospel why not spend a LOT of time mentioning it as part of the new covenant messages we see in John, Hebrews, Romans, Ephesians, Galations Corinthians etc? Not only do we not see that, Paul said he was sent to preach the gospel. If required for salvation, there would be no need to separate it - after all it would be PART of the gospel. With that said, everyone should have that moment of baptism IF they understand it correctly to celebrate their entry into the kingdom and have a visual reminder of what Christ did and has done for you. Legalists, including C of C want to ADD to the gospel. This is unbiblical and takes away from Christ's glory. We don't get to boost about our PERFORMANCE over the free gift (that Christ paid so dearly for). How dare we. As Paul said, it is not of ourselves. It's a free gift. I was Catholic and went to a catholic high school. Our story was always when a Christian came to our doors. "we are Catholic and we don't believe in any other religion" God had something different in mind for me and my family. We end up in a different country with a hard situation where God opened our eyes to see the truth. I'm a faithful believer of our Lord Jesus Christ and am very happy God had mercy on us and showed us the truth. In this passage, Jesus simply acknowledges that Peter knew who He was, God the Son, and He doesn't establish Peter as the single leader of His church. Read Matt 16 from verse 13 for context. John 17:21 isn't a command from Jesus to establish unity under a single church. Again, if you read the verse in context, you see that Jesus is praying for unity of faith for His disciples. Jesus isn't even talking to His disciples here...this verse is in the High Priestly Prayer, and God the Son is speaking to God the Father. Sorry, but there are also Catholic sects that are not Roman Catholic; secevacantist groups, Old Roman Catholic, SSPX, etc. Are these other Catholic sects also heretical? I agree 100% with Pastor John McArthur. 'm a former Catholic. I was born in Catholicism and even went to Catholic schools. After the Lord opened my eyes when He saved me, there was no way I would ever step foot in a Catholic church again. I also researched the origins and beginnings of the Catholic church. In simple words, I believe that Catholicism is a mother-son cult and these cults go all the way to Babylon times with Nimrod and his mother. My maternal siblings and relatives are still Catholics and don't want me to talk to them about this. All they have to do is just to some simple time saving research and it would be right in front of their eyes. However, God has to open their eyes. My husband and I raised our boys in the Baptist faith and now they are adults who have blessed us with ten awesome grandchildren, none of who are Catholics. Even when I was young and dumb, I never would have bowed before the pope and never would even consider kissing his ring either.

It's amazing to me that a Calvinists can talk about faith alone saving you but then talk about distinguishing between "saving faith" and a faith that does not save. Don't you people see this contradiction? My Baptist cousin said, "How we live our life makes no difference. Our good works are like filthy rags." Yet Hebrews 10:24 says, "We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works." Why are protestants so averse to the belief we are save by GRACE through faith working through love? That is what the Catholic Church has taught for 2 millennia. Most of the time scripture mentions 'we are not saved by works of the law', they are referring to the 613 commandments of Judaism.

The English word “priest” is derived from the Greek word presbuteros, which is commonly rendered into Bible English as “elder” or “presbyter.” The ministry of Catholic priests is that of the presbyters mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 15:6, 23)1. The Bible says little about the duties of presbyters, but it does reveal they functioned in a priestly capacity. They were ordained by the laying on of hands (1 Tm 4:14, 5:22), they preached and taught the flock (1 Tm 5:17), and they administered sacraments (Jas 5:13-15).

As someone posed already on here John, which church are you talking about? Your church broke off the Catholic Church and doesn’t have Jesus as its foundation. It has no authority, no magisterium, no priesthood, no Eucharist, etc. Martin Luther was a priest who couldn’t restrain his sinful passions and needed a pass to justify them in his new doctrine.

On the contrary. Even a cursory reading of the New Testament will reveal that the Catholic Church does not have its origin in the teachings of Jesus or His apostles. In the New Testament, there is no mention of the papacy, worship/adoration of Mary (or the immaculate conception of Mary, the perpetual virginity of Mary, the assumption of Mary, or Mary as co-redemptrix and mediatrix), petitioning saints in heaven for their prayers, apostolic succession, the ordinances of the church functioning as sacraments, infant baptism, confession of sin to a priest, purgatory, indulgences, or the equal authority of church tradition and Scripture. So, if the origin of the Catholic Church is not in the teachings of Jesus and His apostles, as recorded in the New Testament, what is the true origin of the Catholic Church? For the first 280 years of Christian history, Christianity was banned by the Roman Empire, and Christians were terribly persecuted. This changed after the “conversion” of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine provided religious toleration with the Edict of Milan in AD 313, effectively lifting the ban on Christianity. Later, in AD 325, Constantine called the Council of Nicea in an attempt to unify Christianity. Constantine envisioned Christianity as a religion that could unite the Roman Empire, which at that time was beginning to fragment and divide. While this may have seemed to be a positive development for the Christian church, the results were anything but positive. Just as Constantine refused to fully embrace the Christian faith but continued many of his pagan beliefs and practices, so the Christian church that Constantine and his successors promoted progressively became a mixture of true Christianity and Roman paganism. Following are a few examples: Most Roman Catholic beliefs and practices regarding Mary are completely absent from the Bible. Where did those beliefs come from? The Roman Catholic view of Mary has far more in common with the Isis mother-goddess religion of Egypt than it does with anything taught in the New Testament. Interestingly, the first hints of Catholic Mariology occur in the writings of Origen, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, which happened to be the focal point of Isis worship. The Lord’s Supper being a consumption of the literal body and blood of Jesus is not taught in the Bible. The idea that bread and wine are miraculously transformed into the literal body and blood of Jesus (transubstantiation) is not biblical. However, several ancient pagan religions, including Mithraism, which was very popular in the Roman Empire, had some form of “theophagy” (the eating of one’s god) as a ritualistic practice. Roman Catholicism has “saints” one can pray to in order to gain a particular blessing. For example, Saint Gianna Beretta Molla is the patron saint of fertility. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals. There are multiple patron saints of healing and comfort. Nowhere is even a hint of this taught in Scripture. Just as the Roman pantheon of gods had a god of love, a god of peace, a god of war, a god of strength, a god of wisdom, etc., so the Catholic Church has a saint who is “in charge” over each of these and many other categories. Many Roman cities had a god specific to the city, and the Catholic Church provided “patron saints” for cities as well. The idea that the Roman bishop is the vicar of Christ, the supreme leader of the Christian Church, is utterly foreign to the Word of God. The supremacy of the Roman bishop (the papacy) was created with the support of the Roman emperors. While most other bishops (and Christians) resisted the idea of the Roman bishop being supreme, the Roman bishop eventually rose to supremacy, again, due to the power and influence of the Roman emperors. After the western half of the Roman Empire collapsed, the popes took on the title that had previously belonged to the Roman emperors-Pontifex Maximus. Many more examples could be given. These four should suffice in demonstrating the origin of the Catholic Church. Of course, the Roman Catholic Church denies the pagan origin of its beliefs and practices. The Catholic Church disguises its pagan beliefs under layers of complicated theology and church tradition. Recognizing that many of its beliefs and practices are utterly foreign to Scripture, the Catholic Church is forced to deny the authority and sufficiency of Scripture. The origin of the Catholic Church is the tragic compromise of Christianity with the pagan religions that surrounded it. Instead of proclaiming the gospel and converting the pagans, the Catholic Church “Christianized” the pagan religions and “paganized” Christianity. By blurring the differences and erasing the distinctions, the Catholic Church made itself attractive to the idolatrous people of the Roman Empire. One result was the Catholic Church becoming the supreme religion in the Roman world for centuries. However, another result was the most dominant form of Christianity apostatizing from the true gospel of Jesus Christ and the true proclamation of God’s Word. Second Timothy 4:3-4 declares, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
