This has been a real tough year as a Raider fan. The garbage that is going on with the team this season and now this. While the Madden games are far from their glory now, I still remembered the fun times and hours spent on Madden 03. Also great theater to watch him commentate games with Pat and Al in recent years, it still doesn't feel that long ago when I last heard him in the Super Bowl game with the Cardinals and Steelers. Damn and that doesn't even take into account of his influence as Raiders coach. Another great and recent HOFer Tom Flores came after him but John was still the gold standard. RIP, you were and ARE still the quintessential Raider.

John Madden could thank in a way the Buffalo Bills for his chance to coach the Raiders. After the loss to the Jets in the 1968 AFL Championship Raiders then-coach John Rauch resigned to take over the HC job with the Bills. Al Davis decided to hire Madden as he had come up through the organization. Rauch balked at the interference of Davis in the day-to-day coaching decisions and left for Buffalo (where he would have to deal with another "control freak" in Bills owner Ralph Wilson). Madden in fact got along very well with Al Davis and the team went on to be very successful and ultimately to win the SB in the 1976 season
