This is John Mahon's reaction to watching NEMOPHILA / HYPNOSIS [Official Music Video] for the first time.
John Mahon has been in the Elton John band since 1997. He was voted the #3 Percussionist by Modern Drummer Magazine 2010 Readers Poll. John has also performed with Peter White, Al Stewart, Rita Coolidge, Helen Reddy and with Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron.

I'm enjoying John Mahon's reactions. Even for songs that aren't totally his cup of tea, he listens carefully to the performance and is respectful of the talent that is on display. He seems like a quality guy. I'm really, really hoping that he gets an opportunity to be introduced to LOVEBITES.

Great guy Joel. Respectful, knowlegeable, Takes the time to listen and enjoy the bands for what they are. Please show him more Nemophila, something rad, like Rise of Raitei. Sure he will love it!! And please also show him Lovebites as well..

I kinda wish the new live Change the World video would have been out for John to view, I think that would have been even more up his alley especially given his comments about what he wished he would have gotten to seen more. Enjoyed watching his reaction to this song, you can tell just how accomplished of a musician he is by his respect toward music outside of wheel house.

Fantastic reaction! Nemophila are still fairly new to me but they have very unique charisma. Although this pv/video certainly doesn't show it one of the thing I love most about J-Rock/Metal bands is that they are usually not "all about the singer". There are bands where each member has their own fanclub and where the drummer, bassist, guitarist, pianist, violinist etc. are actually the ones with the most support from fans. I love that because it intigrates the vocals as "just another instrument" and doesn't downgrade the band as mearly supporting the frontman/frontwoman. I don't know if you've every heard of Dir en grey. But they are a perfect example here. Their vocalist, Kyo is one of the best metal vocalists out there and yet their drummer Shinya is probably the most popular member of the band. Which people in the west often find very annoying because they think he's not even a metal drummer 😂 (I do think that he is, but he also never said he was and the band just does their own thing anyway which is amazing precisely because of that!). One thing that someone needs to tell John is that you don't usually destroy your vocal chords if you train to scream/growl correctly! On the contrary. The human body is a marvel :)

Nice reaction. This is also a banger song by Nemophila. It is not typical for them though. It would have been nice to let him see another one also. A bit complicated if he do not like growls. Maybe one of their better covers? Or maybe a song where she has no effect on her screams. Unfortunately there is an effect on Dissension. Maybe Oiran or Raitai? Or some Iron maiden. Seikima II is good also. Actually it is soo much good to choose from. What a nice problem!

Ou I hold my fingers crossed that you showed him Atarashii Gakko. I'm late to the party ^^'. If you haven't you should totally consider doing so next time! I think it could be a great fit, especially with their earlier songs. This was great to watch! Not my favorite from them but the drums + percussion mix made it a really good fit for John Mahon I think! Thank you!!

Imo "Hypnosis" is pretty atypical for Nemophila and one of their weaker songs. I use to introduce friends into Nemophila through "Raitei", "Dissension" or "Revive" or "The Banana Song" 😇😍

I appreciate this guy promoting bands from Japan, but he really should let somebody else choose the introduction songs.. Nemophila just released 3 great live performance songs he could've showcased, but for some weird reason chose this one ?.. I like the song, but it's Not a good introduction to Nemophila.. you only get 1 chance at a first impression..why not put the best foot forward that showcases the "entire" band, as the guest pointed out.. All these bands have stand out performances that detail the amazing talent, skill level and artistry they possess.. I hope he takes this as constructive criticism, rather than as a complaint, because I really appreciate him bringing these to the insiders.

He already tries to let the audience decide. Before meeting with his guests he makes a video where he asks us what songs they should react to. I think there was not much demand for Nemophila in the first place (most people focussed on The Warning and Band Maid) so I'm happy he put them in nonetheless as John's reaction was really nice to watch. Anyway, look out for that type of video next time and make your own suggestions! :)

Yeah, not a good choice to chose a experimental song by a band to introduce someone new them. While Nemophila does vary in styles, but this song is unique aside Mayu screams, and no other song of theirs is like that.

I think you're thinking of "In the Name of God" which there's definitely a level of similarity between the main riff of "Hypnosis" and the first heavy riff of "In the Name of God" that gets repeated throughout the song. I believe Hypnosis was written by Haraguchi-san, and given that Murata Tamu lists Dream Theatre as her favorite artist on the Nemophila site I'd be surprised if the similarity wasn't noticed and discussed.
