John Martyn was a true genius. He's virtually unknown in the States, but all of us who are guitarists and songwriters revere and remember him. God bless you John, for being true to what all of us work towards: true and honest expression through the guitar or human emotion.

Thank the Heavens for one-offs like JM. Crept into my life at 17, late 1979 and while others have come and gone this guy has remained a constant companion and has grown and grown in my mind as a musician and lyricist

0:23 "It was nothing fans, nothing!". 0:44 "That's even before I play!". What a stage presence, absolute genius. Outstanding stuff.

Grew up with his music, (him and Joni Mitchell). Such a blessing. I was so sad when he died. Hey thanks John. Such a talent and thank you for being a major part of the music that formed the background of my life.

What a great performance - John is sober (well, pretty much) and on top form. I wish I could have been at UCL that night, to have seen and heard him play ...

But could he still play? Had seen him plastered and still manage to amaze and delight while playing and singing to perfection. ❤☮🌎

Tam Tam Go! is a folk-rock band originally from Badajoz (Spain) built by Nacho Campillo and Javier Capillo; this spanish group in 2001 released a studio album entitled "Nubes Y Claros" (Clouds And Clear) in this album Tam Tam Go! makes one of the best versions in spanish of song belonging to John Martyn, "Head And Heart". Jonh Martyn's version is a quiet song, slow-paced; Tam Tam Go's version is a song with a rhythm of drums... it seems half ballad, half bolero.

Why is he singing to the two microphones?

+sto papierów ..........because the President of the USA made a speech earlier ;) didn't think you'd buy that, so here goes..... 2 reasons: Firstly you'll need to think of the slightly less sophisticated 1970's.....fancy "active" splitters were not available back then.....so to safely provide a split signal (one for the PA + another for the recording mobile) where the technical earthing is not "common" - 2 microphones were deployed. Secondly (applies to live work) 2 vocal microphones were where the diaphragms of the 2 mics were separated physically to help eliminate feedback. This technique was called Differential Miking. The slightly offset placement of the diaphragms caused audio sources that were not close to cancel out (like stage monitors or the Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound) but it allowed a proximate sound source (like the vocalist) to be captured. For this concert - technique1 applies to this occasion.....since it was a BBC OB unit covering the sound/televisuals.

+emenveeuk .....also 3rd reason.......in the case of the President or Kings Speech......2 microphones are used on a lecturn for either: equal coverage (for sideways address)....&/or as backup for an "important announcement" to always ensure the leader "NEVER" loses his public statement due to technical failure.

+sto papierów I asked this question about another clip I saw, the answer I got is that one mic is for the PA in the auditorium, the second is for the broadcast.

John never went "on to keyboards" ....guitar was his instrument, it was like a third arm to him...he may have dabbled but whenever I saw him he never once played keyboards Spencer Cousins was his keyboard man for a long time and as far as I know, never played keyboards on any of his albums.
