That 9 to 5 comment reminded me of when I was an assistant engineer on an Elton John session and talking to Gus Dudgeon his producer on breaks. He said Bernie Taupin treats lyric writing like a 9 to 5 job. He said Bernie has an office above his garage and everyday leave his house and same time goes to his office and writes lyrics, takes a lunch break, finishes his day and leaves the office. He said Elton submits orders for topics of lyrics he would like and Bernie works on them and delivers them. Gus showed us on of Bernies typed out lyric sheets for a song on the album he was doing. Our bodies and I'd mind like when we live basically on a schedule.

Wow, honestly grateful to find this corner of internet... sitting tired as a young parent in the evening as a wannabe musician I just put "John Mayer" into the search bar for some kind thoughts... and I found out that actually there is this channel to share some of them. :) Thank you and greetings from Hungary! (don't judge me by my nation ;) )

I would always rather have 1 album every few years that stays with me for the rest of my life than a new album every year that I get sick of. John's albums have honestly stayed in my playlists for a whole decade and more

"Not on a label anymore" takes me by surprise. JM is one of the last 'major recording artists' in the traditional sense. And his story isn't a Taylor Swift/Big Machine saga. He was on Columbia, the same label as Springsteen, Dylan, Billy Joel and Barbara Streisand, to name a few.

Why does that surprise you? With youtube, social media, etc, he can reach the same audience without a label. That, and most of artists' revenue these days is from touring, not streams or record sales. Doesn't surprise me at all that he doesn't have a label.

Fascinating. Makes sense now. I always thought it came easy to him. When you look at it, whoever is really good at what they do, goes through this and puts in the work.

Always instructive and motivational to hear how people make their sausage 😂. Appreciate the peek behind the curtain, sir.
