What shines for me? Eric's vocals!! Huge guitar fan of these guys, but I can't help but be impressed at how flawlessly good Eric's voice is at 70+. Especially since I've found that by that age, the vocals usually start to wander -- the little enmeshments, the runs, and whatnot, they all start to sound a little too character-driven, if you know what I mean. The attempt to still be rock can get a little, idk, overdone, transparent, dare I say edging towards cartoonish for some. But Eric sounds like pure, authentic, rock gold to me. Amazing. Honestly amazing.

@@vitkrivanek9378 Yeah, I saw that too. However, it may be quality mics combined with compressors that bring the "soft" up (by bringing the "loud" down and then raising everything) and quality FOH (front of house) sound men. It might be canned, but just that bit alone doesn't 100% convince me.
@michaeltritter27436 ай бұрын
The more I watch it, the more convinced I am that it is actually live. The way his body motions and expressions match with the intonations and embellishments, that's too hard to match when trying to lip-sync. I understand you pov, but my opinion is he is actually singing live.

The fact that Eric Clapton has been suffering with Emphysema for the last 7-8 years! And a degenerative Nerve condition that makes it EXTREMELY painful for him to play now and will eventually prevent him playing at all (so he's been/is) losing his ability to play over time. Both conditions are progressive and obviously emphysema is fatal over time. The fact he can still perform to such an amazing level DESPITE ALL that and his age being 78 I think now? Is TRULY Amazing! ❤️🎸💪😎🏴🇬🇧

Loved the request by Eric to Doyle "do you fancy a go" at 03:20 but they were great solos by Eric and John anyway, loved it! Top stuff! The line up here is as follows: Eric Clapton - guitar, vocals, festival artistic producer Doyle Bramhall II - guitar, vocals Chris Stainton - keyboards Paul Carrack - keyboards, vocals Nathan East - bass Sonny Emory, Steve Gadd - drums Katie Kissoon, Sharon White - backing vocals John Mayer - Guitar Hope this helps if anybody was wondering who's who. 🎸🎸 Cheers!

👍 🎸 🎤 IDK exactly why their are SO MANY 👎 comments on this collaboration of ‘Cocaine’ - for multiple reasons?! Going on 70 now, I grew up listening to Clapton playing this song, and have seen/heard multiple other live versions over the years. Other than Eric, and Nathan East (along with the other backups), it’s NOT one of the ‘usual’ ones they’re used to playing. They don’t ‘know’ it like the back of their hand like Clapton does - who seemingly plays/sings it effortlessly and not having to even think about HOW or what to do to make it sound good. For him, it’s ‘natural’. Although I don’t feel that it’s his best performance, but still it’s not as awful or pitiful as people are saying it is!

Gotta say, as technically good as Mayer is, there’s something lacking in his solo here. Eric just has that touch. Maybe the word I’m looking for is cadence? I can’t put my finger on it but there’s a difference
@elainemeyer50626 ай бұрын
👍 🤔 I think I know what you’re trying to say about Mayer’s performance? IMO he lacks the ‘emotion’ when playing 🎸, vs Clapton - who I must say doesn’t always show very much either. BUT he’s able to get away with it bc he’s so good - both vocally and playing. Also, perhaps it’s the fact that Mayer isn’t used to this song as much as Eric, who’s been playing it effortlessly for many years now! I’m going on 70 now, and grew up listening to him from the 1st time he released it - Mayer on the other hand…?
@cidlopez6 ай бұрын
@@elainemeyer5062 yeah, I’m not sure what it is. He’s clearly a guitar master but there’s just some thing not popping with his solo here. And a few years ago I watched him perform crossroads with Eric Clapton. Again the solo was not hitting right. It was nowhere near the solo that Eric performed live on the original album. Maybe it was that he was pulling back so that he did not upstage Eric?

@@cidlopez ✅ To add to your original comment, and my subsequent ones: If you can find the 🎸 🎤 🎹 duet Mayer did with Alicia Keys in Times Square, NY, quite some years ago, I thought that IT was about the best I’ve ever seen him perform. They did ‘Gravity’ and ‘If I ‘Ain’t Got You’ (IIRC that was the 1st one). They played with such a visible, REAL emotional connection, complementing one another, completely unlike THIS performance imo. It almost felt that Mayer and Keys were playing/singing just for one other, and NOT even aware or considering the fact that there was a large group of people there.
