John Mayer - The Hurt (@ The Hotel Cafe) Audio Only

John Mayer plays an unreleased acoustic piece "The Hurt" at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, California (2006-05-28).
There's some monologue at the beginning where John mentions that this song didn't make it to the Continuum record but will be on the next record (Battle Studies?). I'm offering this track because John's new album is on the verge of completion, and it's always rewarding to hear a song at its infancy and then appreciate the musical development involved to create a final product. In other words, you can listen to this draft of a song now and grow to the changes of the upcoming version. Enjoy!

As some people have said before, this song inspired the end of "Friends, lovers or nothing", in Battle Studies album. John wrote this song, but he thought it would fit better in this other song. If you listen to this song closely, the chords are the same. He personally tells this on "Someday I'll fly" music documentary.

The chord progression of the verse is exactly the same as the end of Friends Lovers or Nothing, so he probably won't release this song on an album. He'd effectively be doing two songs which are the same. And John Mayer doesn't tend to do that.

I think friends lovers or nothing is a more accomplished song in terms of hooks and melody and overall I think this song doesn’t rly have a hook. It’s just aimless singing so I’m happy this turned into the anything other than yes is no part cause that is soooo catchy

It’s too lose in the “bridge” area almost like he just tossed in a bunch of chord progressions to fill space. FLoN is definitely more of a structurally sound song but the beginning of this song……can’t be beat. Just my opinion

The main thing is that 'Friends...' and the whole of 'Battle Studies' are way overproduced. It's a great song (see the live version at the Hotel Café), but the studio version kills it. We'll never know what 'The Hurt' could have been tho

This video was during a small gig before the continuum release. So as he explained it was not going to be on the continuum album (probably because of Columbia Records when he turned in his master copy to them which they most likely sent back to him for cuts). So he intended it to be on battle studies ( "the album after the new one") but instead used that same chord progression in the outro to "Friends Lovers or Nothing", making a studio album release of this song unlikely.

he reworked the chord progression onto the outro for "Friends, Lovers, or Nothing" on the Battle Studies record, it's been mentioned in interviews and the Eastwood Allen "Someday I'll Fly" KZbin documentary. John has so many great gems that he never puts on records because they don't fit the theme of the concept.

I like this song ALOT, but I don't think this will be released anytime soon. Depending on where he is after Born and Raised, it might be on his 6th album, but he wrote this song when he was in his "phase" of running around and acting like a douche. Love him, but he even admitted of how juvenile he was from post Continuum to post Battle Studies. This song kinda exemplifies that phase of his life so we'll see.
