Amazing actually. With such simple forehand and backhand strokes, McEnroe could win multi Grandslams. Ultimately though his lack of power strokes exposed him at Roland Garros. But, it was so so close in 1984 against Lendl; I was rooting for him all the way.

There's more amazing volleys and near-net shots in one set here than in entire modern tournament. The way and speed they move on court is also great.

@@bhashuvbr but racquets are more powerful so... the real thing is fitness. players are way fitter than back then. move faster and hit harder with more powerful racquets. so balls can be slower it doesn't affect the game speed. same happened in Table Tennis but the game became faster anyway for the same reasons.

The absolute best sweet-spot of Power, Speed, Touch & Artistry - mesmerizing tennis ! Unfortunately it's gone for good, we got glimpes of it with the great RF throughout the years but... unless strings are limited and grass sped up a bit... we won't be seeing this anymore... Thank God for historic records such as this...

Never heard commentators talk so much about how over the hill someone was in reference to Mcenroe. John showed that he still had the goods here. He had nothing more to prove at this point but yet he dug down deep and beat an opponent who was playing great. Cash at 27 was technically still in his physical prime but yet he was also talked about like he was a grandfather. One of Mcenroe's best efforts showing true athletic character.

Interesting to compare this match to McEnroe Agassi semi of the same year. The difference being the return technique employed by Agassi, it revolutionised the game.

1992 was destined to be Agassi's - he was inspired - even though I am/was a Mac fan I was delighted for Agassi - his ability to hit dipping shots from mid court sliced balls to Macs' feet was just astonishing

the academy of lawn tennis: both players serve well enough to get to the net but not fast enough to avoid a return, so there are beautiful volleys, passing shots and lobs all the time. What a way to play tennis!

These announcers were all over the map. They kept talking about how over the hill McEnroe was and how he was going lose to a younger man. Then when McEnroe started to take control it was all about Cash not having much match play. For 2 hours they were writing Mcenroe's epitaph. Great match that really doesn't get talked about enough with both players having their chances to win.

Federer Nadal Djokovic & Murray. Magical tennis. Every bit as good if not better. Massive matches. 4-6hrs. I watched in the day, finishing work & rushing home for Borg finals. Different days. All good.

John Barrett, the commentator, played in Wimbledon himself from 1951, and is married to Wimbledon champion and World no. 1 Angela Mortimer. Both still alive in their 90s!

Pat Cash had a fine career, but man, had he stayed healthy, and had a little better groundstrokes, he could have been an absolute beast. Everyone talks about Edberg, Sampras, Mac, and Becker as great volleyers, and they were, but Pat Cash was rock solid at the net. Some of the reaching volleys he hit in this match, off of good passing attempts, were superb. He could move like a cat at that net too. What a great match.

Hillarious how our archetypal british comentator actually said mac has kept his self control meticulously, he threw his bat a load of times, grassed pat up to the umpire behind his back, cursed the umpire about 4 times, same with line judges, and even told people in the crowd to shut up....and cash got a warning!! Hahahaha, clasic match great stuff, note to cash, clean it up ya messy git!

Actually everyone was 4 ft. tall back in the 80s and early 90s. Advances in nutrition and TV aspect ratios changed all that by 2000.
