This is the first stop in my new series the best gyms in America! On today's stop we hit up the world famous Quads Gym in Chicago. This is a MUST if you are in the Chicago area. It looks small from the outside but let me tell you your mind will be blown when you start walking around. Listen to the passion in Dave's voice too. The way he treats his customers, the way he loves his gym, just what a gym and someone who runs a gym should aspire to be. I am so privileged to have been able to do this at this awesome gym.

It began as a dream shared between two childhood friends, 35 years ago, in a basement.
Dave De Young and Tom Milanovich lived that dream, opening a gym where friends could gather to lift weights, to get stronger and back then, to compete. Quads Gym evolved from Tom’s basement to a small storefront space, to the 46,000 square foot space in Calumet City, just south of Chicago, known back then as the “Land of the Giants” where true bodybuilders trained hard.
The second location opened on Chicago’s North Side in 1988, with another 40,000 square feet boasting 115 pieces of cardio, 5 complete sets of dumbbells, kettle bells, 45 pieces of Hammer Strength, and hundreds of other unique pieces from Cybex, Paramount, Nebula, Strength Inc., Elite Systems and Sports Art. All of this as well as boards, chains, farmers walk handles, a log, and a dead lift platform. Boxing, pilates and martial arts all combine to make it easy for bodybuilders to train here along with your everyday fitness enthusiast.
Gym member Greg Sorrells says, “if you’re serious about lifting, or if you want to be a power lifter in Chicago, you absolutely must come to Quads. Supportive atmosphere - everything you need to train is here. You can really get down to business, but it’s respectful,people give us our space and we give them theirs. I’ve been working out at Quads Gym for over 17 years. I’ve worked for Dave as his night manager for 10 years! Dave’s an awesome guy, and being at this gym is like a family! It’s home away from home! Thanks to the magazine's Golds and World Gyms (and all the legends that trained there) have always had the spotlight. But there are so many other gyms that have been around just as long with just as much atmosphere, camaraderie, blood and sweat. As soon as camera started rolling you know you are seeing an old school iron pit and the twinkle in Dave De Young's eye screams the heart and soul he's put into the place. This is going to be a great series John and serve as a valuable asset to the history of the sport!

I train here every-time I visit Chicago to see family. I've been 20+ times and I still discover new, amazing equipment every session. Wall to wall old school dungeon style gym. I would kill for a local gym that was 1/4 of what Quads is.

I get up between 12am and 3am on Sunday morning to do deadlifts and it's not great getting up that early but when I get done doing them I'm happy. The gyms empty except for maybe one or two people. It's a Anytime Fitness gym I don't live anywhere near a big(real) gym. I'm 59 and want to workout until I die.
