This is an interesting talk; however, I'm always taken aback by the lack of economic considerations concerning American interests. Both the elites and critics assume that America can carry these responsibilities indefinitely. America is rich but not that rich; America is like the dissolute heir that believes the trust fund will never dry up. Since Reagan (1980-1988) and including the subsequent Presidents, Americans have been sold a fantasy that you can have good schools, roads, financially sound cities, and an expansive foreign policy while having low taxes. That fantasy will eventually burst. Secondly, China need not ever go to war with the US. Thanks to the deliberate deindustrialisation of America (NAFTA), America is deeply dependent on China for many of the goods that Americans rely on for their daily lives. China need only to cut off the flow of goods to the US. When the Wal-Marts and Targets are bereft of goods will that dependency become obvious. Additionally, China is working to become less dependent on the US market; that's the point of its Silk Road strategy. Its expansion into the ME and Africa is part of their strategy. Making nice with their Asian neighbors and opening markets there is part of their policy. (Not all the Asian nations have a good view of China). The TransPacific Pact was designed not only to liberalize trade between the US and the Asian Bloc but to counter the rise of China in the region. Trump's deep-sixing the agreement left those countries little choice but to consider China as an alternative. Whether the agreement would have been advantageous to the US is open to question; its primary purpose was geopolitical: to contain China and limit its reach. To conclude, American domination and influence may last for quite a while but it won't last forever.

It was about the tech companies like Apple, Google, etc ensuring their monopolies in the international digital economy and sacrificing more US industry to secure it. I would have thought it obvious. It's about access to markets and resources on favourable terms while having the ability to restrict the same access to competitors. China's rise makes it by default the major competitor for market share as well as political influence in Asia. As such it is both an economic and a military rival to the United States. I say military rival because sooner or later China is going to want to assert its geopolitical presence in the South China Sea and the corollary of that is a weakening of the economic, political and military position of the United States. With regards geostrategic competition in Asia the United States seems to view things in terms of a zero sum game whereby a gain for others automatically translates as a loss for themselves. Such a point of view is bound to lead to political friction, perhaps even leading to outright conflict, if it is not willing to concede regional hegemony to China - which is probably an historical inevitably at this point.

I like Mearsheimer's lectures, and I think he brings up a lot of valid points. Something funny I found myself thinking though is that around 57:00 when he asks the audience: "wouldn't you rather be a powerful state like America?", I actually found myself thinking 'no'. As an American, I feel that global hegemony actually comes at a high cost domestically. I would rather be a Sweden or Denmark, a country who has focused heavily on internal development and essentially has no power in the sphere of international relations, or is part of a broader bloc like the EU/NATO which can guarantee it's security. I agree with some of the other comments on here which rightfully point out that even though America was and arguably still is the global hegemon and the most powerful state, the domestic cost has been high. We don't have affordable education or healthcare and there are still relatively high levels of poverty, food, and housing insecurity. There is still massive work to be done at home, yet whenever potential programs for these issues are brought up the first question is always, 'well, how would we fund that'?. The 700 billion we spend each year on the military, however, is off limits and viewed as completely necessary to our existence, even though, as Mearsheimer rightly pointed out, given our geography, wealth, and nuclear deterrence, we are already the most secure state in the history of the world. Yet somehow, this hegemonic overreach, far from being a temporary state of affairs, has somehow become accepted as the new normal.

However, the best estimates suggest that the U.S. since 2001 has spent 8 TRILLION dollars on the wars in the Middle East and adventures in the Horn of Africa. Upwards of 300 million dollars PER DAY. Obviously this hasn't 'depleted' the economy, but it is undeniable that this has been a massive drag on social spending. But to be fair to the Prof, he is very frank about his views that the US is determined to contain China by all means necessary to maintain its position as the sole hegemon and super-power. I must admit most Americans share his views too and what makes it more dangerous is that the US is confident it can crush China easily just as it did with past competitors like Spain, Japan, Germany and Russia. My view is that the US fleet will lose a battle in the South China Sea as China is already preparing for it. That's why it is building military bases on the Paracels and Spratly Islands. Tragically it will then escalate into a full scale and even nuclear war as the US cannot be seen to be slighted...

You have a good sense on Asia/China/South China Sea - while I agree with the Prof. on most issues - I doubt a hot war will happen any time in the next 10-20 years between the two giants. The reason is precisely what you mentioned - US cannot win besides the question should US even want a war in the South China Sea. The other point I have doubt is that the Southeast Asian countries will side US against China. No doubt that there are strong sentiments against China as well as pro-US there, but the realpolitik means they would rather stay neutral than picking a side - at least outwardly. The recent events affirm the neutral stance taken by there countries.

It was taken out of context. President Trump policy was to restrict illegal immigration, something that any self respecting country would do. Not the legal immigration. Further Mr. Mearsheimer mentioned that USA needs those immigrants coming from the south border as they fill in the positions for works that Americans wouldn’t do, probably thinking of low paid jobs. Nice! That sounds like a modern day slavery. If USA cares about immigrants coming from the south border would be nice if it makes it easy for them to enter the country through legal process and screening for security reasons and let them have a decent life, so that they can have legal employment with benefits. This way they are treated like second class citizens. Immigration policy of the USA is very restrictive. Thus, those talks about accepting new immigrants are not quite true. President Trump was not to blame for that. Intentionally misinterpreting of his stance on immigration or should I say, illegal immigration, which is nothing more than modern day slavery.

John has always been a vocal supporter of American hegemony - hidden under his argument of Realism. Wherever he goes, if we put his arguments under microscopic analysis, we find this: No country can rise peacefully, not even China, so America has to find a way to contain China by hook or by crook. Russia is no way just a regional power now but John argues that it is a falling country and hence should join the USA in containing China - or - USA should invite Russia to march against China. Over 40% of population in the USA is under the line of poverty. He doesn't talk about that. We don't hear from him anything about the US debt. Well Europe is fully under US control and we do not need to say anything on the issue.

JM's perspective is the Estblishments, a white elitist Empire perspective only. He calls it "liberal hegemony" but its the opposite. Its Fascism. The victims call it invasion occupation and oppression. Neoliberal Empire is fascism. JM calls it "liberalism", as if US national security policy and force projection has anything to do with individual rights and liberties. JM is pushing out pure propaganda. America runs a uniformed mafia of invaders and murderers. How can anyone especially one pretending to be a scholar ignore that? He talks about isolationism based on security which is bull shit. Again he claims isolationism created the grotesque US security state when it fact its Empire that created and drives it, not isolationists. JM is a hack butler for the US elite view of history, without wasting time worrying about anyone else, like the bottom half of America and the countries it invades.

@Spiritual Traveler "Over 40% of population in the USA is under the line of poverty." This is an absurd statement. Only about 11% of Americans fall below the poverty line. Let's also keep in mind that Trump didn't bring up the idea of NATO allies being free loaders. Obama called NATO allies, specifically France and the UK, "free riders" after failing to stabilize Libya in 2016. Madeleine Albright has said that "NATO needed to shift its core mission" after the Cold War, so the US used it as a vehicle to spread liberal democracy around the world, and that it would use the military alliances to achieve its political objectives. In other words, NATO would go from "defensive" to "offensive". She even mentioned Yugoslavia, which became a mess.

If either act too independently, however, they will both run up against the limits of their own power and that of the United States. The United States is powerful but it is not all powerful, just look at its performance in Syria vis-à-vis Russia as an example. It can bend over backwards for Israel and Saudi Arabia but it still has to acknowledge the limits of that power when their interests come into conflict with another great power; what's in the best interests of Israel and Saudi Arabia is not necessarily in the best interests of the United States.

The Military Industrial Complex simply characterizes various dictators as madmen in their attempts to gain public support and justify new wars. Brexit has had no effect on the rest of the EU. He also doesn't really deal with the many ways in which countries like the US, China, India, Russia -- and the EU -- will change over the next 20-30 years -- politically, socially, culturally. There's an assumption the same leaders, the same issues, will be there forever. And, finally, the competition with China is qualitatively different from the competition with the USSR. It's an economic competition, more similar to the way the US outcompeted the UK, or Germany (read Hitler's invectives about the US assuming hegemonic power in the world -- therefore Germany had to find room -- to the east -- to expand its growth potential, etc.). China is rising peacefully, with little demonstration of attempting to change any other regime near or far. How exactly does the US counter a peaceful economic expansion?

Jobs that Americans wouldn't take at a fair market value could be filled by a guest worker program that allows foreign guest workers to enter the United States legally after they are vetted to determine that they are not criminals and healthy, perform jobs at the hiring manager's expense, not the taxpayers, with not path to citizenship and permanent residency. Their whereabouts could be known at all times and if warranted be deported expeditiously such as if they commit a crime. The remittances these people send back to their families is very important to them and we understand it. A legal right to be in the United States means they would not have to live in the shadows or in fear but they understand the conditions for their being here. Under the current system people here illegally performing these functions can be exploited by their employers, criminals and others constantly living in fear of being arrested and deported. This would eliminate human trafficking, smuggling drugs, entry of gang members, and those who just want to live on public welfare. Those here illegally send hundreds of billions of dollars out of the United States every year. When combined with the US trade deficit it is well over one trillion dollars a year that leaves the United States. By virtue of the principle of velocity of money if this export of money were ended by preventing remittances by illegals and taxing imports out of our markets to the point where domestically produced goods would have protection of American jobs, industry, technology, companies, tax collectors the US GDP and GNI would grow by 2 to 3 trillion dollars a year immediately. The US was once entirely self sufficient and could be again. There is nothing we import that we can't produce ourselves as well, often better. Labor intensive jobs can be produced using modern robotic machines driven by AI computers. Many automobile assembly plants already operate that way. It would also mean higher wages for Americans. Who would lose? Large corporations that have bribed their way to export their factories and re-import their products with little or no tariffs under the mantra of globalization and free trade and of course the foreign workers and governments who profit from jobs and products that should and could be made in America. To make America great again we have to make Americans rich again and this is the way to do it. It will also make America secure again by knowing that it can always rely on itself to meet its needs.

Russian Fed says their military was conducting exercise near the border with Ukraine. Fewer Americans traveled abroad before ww2, and even among those Americans who did travel abroad, they had the Charles Lindbergh mindset of non intervention. Before ww2, the average American travelling as a foreigner in Europe used to be harassed when travelling abroad. Europeans used to say to any hapless American citizens travelling in Europe, "SO, when will you all elect your next native American President?", as the Frenchmen and Germans used to say to Americans before ww2. Americans during ww2 had to answer when racism will end and when American will elect a native American president, until America destroyed two cities. This gained respect for Americans in Europe. No more insults to Americans travelling abroad after ww2. America in it's present form, where everybody is a Rambo, intent on world dominance, and full of deep swamp people, was created by the Soviet Union. Soviet dissident scientists started designing the atom bomb starting in 1937, to defend Sakhalin islands in 1937. In 1944, two former nuclear scientists from central America visited Washington DC to give smuggled complete Soviet drawings and blast calculations and materials list of the Soviet atom bomb to the president of the United States in about 1944.President first hied radio tinkerer Marconi to head the "Build the Soviet atom bomb in America" project which started in 1944. The Soviet drawings of 1944 smuggled into America were clear enough that even Sadam Husain could have built an atom bomb. You see, before ww2, the average American couldn't show his face in world discussion groups. Wherever an American showed up before ww2, the average Frenchman and average German would insult traveling Americans up to the day before Nagasaki and Hiroshima were destroyed. After this, the French and suddenly, the Germans along with the Americans started talking against Russian nationals wherever possible. all drawings and blast calculations and materials lists were to be given by dissident scientists of Soviet Union to the president of the United States after he gave them audience. They were to give their drawings and materials lists of the Soviet atom bomb to the President of America, "Nazi fighters and bombers may bomb this Soviet nuclear research site of the atom bomb research facility." The Soviet armed soldiers naming the telephones in side the nuclear research facility in the Soviet Union actually let the dissident scientist talk on the phone to former nuclear scientist living in central Europe or elsewhere, to help them smuggle the drawings of the Soviet tom bombs to America.
