I attended Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana from 1979-1983 and we used to see JCM riding around town on his Harley . He'd always wave back to you if you waved to him.

This song is a bona-fide masterpiece. The 70s had one masterpiece after another.

🎊 I’m glad you found this! In 1978, this was my first introduction to “John Cougar;” there was no such thing as a “Mellencamp,” back-in-the-day. But, you know how people are…once they get famous…now all of a sudden they want the world to know what their “real” name is. I was browsing a Peaches record store and stumbled across a new artist named John Cougar (I liked the name) so I took a chance…and paid $3.95 for the album…and sooo glad I did‼️ Truth is, if the album said John Mellencamp…I’d have kept browsing. Also, the version of this song played on AM radio didn’t have the long introduction…but FM radio, did. 🎶 Your next song should be, “Ain’t Even Done With the Night” (1980). You’ll LOVE the lyrics! Personally, I think it’s his best song.

The long intro: This is early early John Mellencamp. John said that when the band first started out they were just a bunch of young hillbilly kids from Indiana. They were clueless. They couldn’t figure out how to transition from musical intro to first verse. They just kept playing, everybody staring at each other shrugging their shoulders. So they just kept playing until it felt ‘right’. lol

My first introduction to this song was seeing him perform it on American Bandstand, but I was kind of confused. The instruments were not lining up with what I was hearing. But years later I got the story why. Back in the day if you were called to perform on AB that was huge. But, it also meant that you had to lip sync. John began to refuse but he also knew what this performance meant since his career was still young. So he did it his way. 😅😅 The dude on the accordion killed it! 😅😅 Here's the link if you want to check it out kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6iVi3uifrB0jdEsi=PGHkfHwk5MIRX_UZ

Another Mellencamp song called "This Time" that was released around the same time is pretty good but is as different from this as it could possibly get. Very 'pop music' sounding, but not bad.

That's the most overindulgent intro to a pop song by a new artist I have ever heard. "Ain't Even Done With the Night" is by far his best song, and not just from this period.
@raeann633 ай бұрын
so when john first got signed to his record label, the execs decided mellencamp wasn't a great name for a rock singer so they made him change it to cougar. with more success/control came the evolution to "cougar mellencamp" and finally "mellencamp". i actually prefer early john cougar, especially "ain't even done with the night" - my favourite. john was pressured back then to write/perform more "pop-sounding" songs than what he actually wanted to do so i don't think he still performs these but i loved this stuff lol.

There was a short version released that got a lot of airplay due to time slot restrictions on top 40 stations. The long version is the better choice however.

Nah, Dominica didn't like it lol A little crude for her taste. But when you're 18 (about my age when this was released) it was one of the best preambles out there, and then the lyrics for me were pretty much a homerun! Great traveling music when on those highways when it's you and the car stereo and a whole lot of miles to go.
