Dedicated to parents (RIP).💞 They absolutely loved this song & the video as they say it was a perfect representation of their upbringing of Mississippi cotton pickers.💪🏾 I went "back home" with them in 1983😟 The town in this video is an exact replica. We even hung out on the porch while people people jammed Blues music on instruments 🎸🥁like the video. This SoCal kid thought I was in Oz😒

...Allow me to say this...I'm 'impressed' The Empress is going outside her comfort zone of 80's Pop tunes, and hitting the more obscure stuff..."Paper In Fire" was a Top Ten hit (#9 Pop, Oct. 1987), but NO ONE remembers it! ...Here's the Top Ten from then, letsget-TOOOO-IIITTTTTT...... (CONT.) 10. One Heartbeat - Smokey Robinson 9.***Paper In Fire*** - John (Cougar) Mellencamp 8. When Smokey Sings - ABC (..tribute song to Smokey, who's' at #10..the ONLY time this happened!) 7. Who Will You Run To - Heart 6. U Got The Look - Prince (w/ Sheena Easton) 5. Carrie- Europe 4. I Heard A Rumour - Bananarama 3. Lost In Emotion - Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam 2. Here I Go Again -Whitesnake 1. Didn't We Almost Have It All - Whitney Houston ...I was THERE, and "Paper..." got NO radio play, but it set off the sound of the 90's with R.E.M, and (Country) grunge Rock! ....Thanks for being DIVERSE, Empress!!

Personally I think he has much better songs like "Pink Houses" and the jewel in his crown "Jack and Diane"

Good song, not great, imo, and not rockabilly either but Americana and definitely easy to listen to. John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen defined Americana during the 80's. When you're ready for more from John Mellencamp check out "Pink Houses", "Small Town", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Crumblin' Down", "Authority Song", "I Need A Lover", and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." among many others. For 80's rockabilly check out The Stray Cats ("Stray Cat Strut" or "Rock This Town"), The Blasters ("Marie Marie"), Dave Edmunds ("From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)") and The Cramps ("I Was a Teenage Werewolf"), and, believe it or not, Queen ( "Crazy Little Thing Called Love").

This track isn’t his best vocal or production. Imo. He has so many brilliant tunes tho. Hurts So Good, Ain’t Even Done w/ the Night, I Need A Lover, Hand To Hold Onto, Lonely Ole Night. ++++

It's all good. Though the beat ain't for everyone, it's the meaning behind the lyrics and the live performance with everybody involved which throw this one over the top for me. I'm guessing you would need to make some more mistakes and get those smoldering dreams burnt down a bit more before you might get the feels like some of us old bastards over this one!

You are not tripping. never was crazy about this song with that annoying repetitive fiddle playing and i feel mellencamp doesnt have the greatest voice either so definately not even close to a bop. better songs by him are check it out, jack and diane, again tonight
