I still love this movie. I was exactly the right age for it when it came out. And they were leg warmers--we wore them with everything back then.

Oh wow! I haven't seen this movie in a loooong time! My older brother was an early Gen Xer, graduated HS in 1983, was a big ONJ fan, and he loved this movie. R.I.P. to my brother, Brad! I think part of the appeal of this movie, for those who liked it, was that MTV was not a thing yet, so this was how young people watched music "videos." Kinda the precursor. It seemed like a modern way to appreciate music at the time. I think other artists did music video movies, like the Beatles, the Who, and TV specials like the Carpenters did before MTV came along.

Hi Empress, Xanadu was a fair movie with a glorious soundtrack and ONJ in her prime. Gene Kelley’s last movie and he was marvelous. (Ginger was with Fred Astaire). Roller skating was da bomb in the late 70’s early 80’s. I used to drive past the Pan Pacific Auditorium (Xanadu) all the time. It’s gone and it’s a big mall now. Disney’s CA Adventure uses the design of the building as piece of the architecture there. Xanadu was the name of Charles Kane’s mansion in Citizen Kane. The name Xanadu has its roots in Chinese culture. I liked the movie loved the music and Olivia. I’ve wanted you to check out a singer for other songs but last summer she happened to make a video on the song Suddenly with UK producer/singer Dan Wesley. I think after watching the movie you may appreciate what they did. Or not, like you she is an old soul. Singing songs mostly of the earlier times. I’ll link Tori Holub and Dan’s video below. It was a fun look back and it looked like you got a better perspective on the movie and the time it came from. I remember Madonna did an interview with TV Guide where she said Prince videos were incredible in the 80s but now (early 90s) they were "cheap and silly and below his ability" 😂

.....DAMN ...RBS is working, and I can't give COMPLETE "Trivia Time" , so I'll give cliffnotes.....***"XANADU" TRIVIA TIME!!!*** (part 1) ...... (16:00) - ...Olivia is in talks w/ the VILLAGE PEOPLE to do a flick called, "Discoland" in 1979, talks fail, and ONJ goes off, and makes her OWN 'Discoland'..... THEN, "Disco" dies...... - ....MASSIVE script re-writes, re-shoots, thrown out ideas, etc. ensue, ONJ is worried....the flick, "Xanadu" comes out Summer 1980, and b-ombs. ...like, *REEEEEEALLY B-OMBS!!* ...ONJ is spared, but EVERYTHING ELSE associated w/ the flick, isn't...........but................... - ...The SOUNDTRACK, became the DEFINITIVE pivot point of "80's Music", and becomes a MASSIVE success!! ...Olivia is EVERYWHERE w/ "Magic", "Xanadu" & "Suddenly", giving us POP, AC, Soft Rock, New Wave, C&W, DANCE, & looked amazing, doing so..... (18:55)....I'll be back.... ; )

This movie is hilarious in all the wrong ways. They adapted it in to a Broadway Musical in the 2000s and the musical played up the ridiculous aspects, it was a hit

I actually enjoyed this film. It was hampered by the fact basic instinct came before (and Sharon stone and Madonna looked very similar, with a similar air of confidence about them) and the fact this movie will be forever tied up with the sex book and the Erotica album. A I can see why critics would hate the film, but I think it's good for what it is and Madonna plays the part well. It's crazy to think that just a short time after, Madonna would go on to star in Evita and would shock the critics' more than she ever could have during her 'sex' overload era.

Yeah she did play the part well! I’ve never seen basic instinct before so I can’t compare the two

Now you gotta check out some of their earlier "Doo-Wop" hits from the 50's and early 60's, like Baby Talk, Heart & Soul, There's A Girl, and Linda. And before Jan & Dean there was JAN & ARNIE! They had a big top 10 hit in 1958 with Jennie Lee!

Last name pronounced ‘Jer-O’ accent on 2nd syllable, like a French name. Al is one of those people in the We Are the World video that reactors always go, ‘who’s that?’, or ‘ hmm I don’t know him’. His initial audience comes from jazz & smooth jazz/r&b. He had more pop flavored hits in the ‘80’s. Kudos & BIG props to you for droppin the whole story in one pause, when you mention ‘beat boxin’. Right there that tells the whole story. Al was one of the vocal improvisers to really get into hand drum & drum beat sounds vocally, like a precursor to beat box error which came about like 3 - 5 yrs later. 👍🏾

Great reaction! You should also react to her song In My Mind available on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5XJi6ycmNB-hs0 IMHO, Heather Headley has not received the wide public recognition that her talent deserves. She originated the role of Nala in the Broadway musical The Lion King. Headley's performance was well received, and she then originated the title role in the Broadway adaptation of Aida, earning the Tony Award for Best Actress in 2000. Her work on her 2002 album This Is Who I am earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best New Artist making her the first Tony Award winner to be nominated for this award. n January 2010 she won her first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album for Audience of One on the EMI Gospel label.

***PRINCE & THE NPG TRIVIA TIME!*** ....SO creamy.......(1:52)...... ; ) - ....well, the New Year STARTS, with an Empress post that has LOTS of trivia! ...how am I going to whittle THIS down!? ...let's TRY..... (cont.) 1. ...This Video was from a Music Video "Movie" called "Diamonds & Pearls", featuring Prince in an acting, Video, & performance piece, with 2 Girls named 'Diamond' & 'Pearl'...It was coinciding with his Summer 1991 Album, with the same title.... 2. ...this tune was the 2nd single, following the VERY controversial "Ge-tt Off", which was the FIRST Song Prince allowed to be remixed by someone else (Steve 'Silk' Hurley')...here's a piece of it... (1:14) 3. .."C-ream" (influenced by T-Rex's 1971 hit, "Bang A G-ong") became Prince's VERY LAST #1 Pop hit (Nov. 1991), and the title track "Diamonds & Pearls") became his very last #1 R&B hit (Feb., 1992) ..... 4. ..."Cre-am" was released because Prince's label thought he couldn't have another 'surefire' hit again, and he got TWO! 5. ...The ORIGINAL CD cover was a limited "3D" holograph of Prince, Diamond & Pearl in a black room 'swirling' around, looking at the viewer.... It became SO popular it became the MAIN cover, until they took it out of print in 2003......how'd I do!? ; )

***HEATHER HEADLEY TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...HE is!? ...no, *SHE* is...(2:19)..... - ....I was late on this One (New Years, etc.), so I'll give quickie trivia...Heather is a VERY acclaimed Broadway Actress, originating roles in "Aida" & "The Lion King", then got a record deal..... - ...her debut "This Is Who I Am" got her noticed, but it wasn't until she became a *DISCO DIVA* , when "He Is" got remixed, and hit # 4 Dance, January 2003....BUT....... - ....the NEXT Single, "I Wish I Wasn't" became a HUGE G-y Dance Club anthem, and she had One of the most popular "Circuit Party" tunes of Summer 2003; She then hit #1 Dance with her collab with the Freemasons, "In My Mind"...... - ...Heather left her label feeling stifled as a 'Disco chick', and went into Gospel, winning LOTS of awards, then going back to Broadway, winning LOTS of Awards, then TV, winning LOTS of awards! ...like I said, SHE is.... ; )
