I was 13 years old in 1976 and the song absolutely blew my mind at the time. It was around the same time that Queen's Bohemian Rapsody was made. A time when complex music could become a #1 hit. To this day I think "Wow!" when I hear this song, it hasn't lost any of its power to this day. I love how he skips through the different genres of music, only to keep coming back to his "Music was my first love", first in major, then in minor, and finally wonderfully orchestral. Everything about this song is just right and I admire the genius that brought such disparate parts together so beautifully.😍🥰

I heard this song first time when we played it in our orchestra. I played the trombone, and I had several solos to play. A really great song. The fast part at the end was the most difficult part for me to play.

Rest in peace, John! Saw him live at Heineken Night Of The Proms. Also seen that show without him. It's just NOT the same without him. That's a show in which classic meets pop. Blondie, Coolio, UB40 etc between well-known orchestra pieces. Absolutely amazing!

In the 80s John was part of Tina Turner’s live band and guitarplayer and vocalist and as Tina said it “John doing all my duets with me when either Bryan Adams or David Bowie aren’t around.” He also is for me, next to Colin Blunstone and Eric Woolfson, the defining voice of the Alan Parsons Project.
