I'm not a country fan and stumbled across this by accident. I have heard many covers of this song, and this one is really, really good. Probably the best I've heard. It really captures a sadness and melancholy in the lyrics, the end of summer. The tempo and humble production values of this version is just perfect.

I really hate it that you do this song with such emotion. 50 years ago on a sandy beach in Florida I met the girl I wanted to spend forever with. We were both young and reality forced me to enlist in the Army. I did it all. Infantry, Airborne Paratrooper, Special Forces. Combat action. We drifted apart and she left me for another guy. When I came home she was gone. I keep moving but I'm empty inside. This song is the dagger in my heart and you killed it. Great cover to move me like you did. I'm so glad we don't live forever. I keep listening to this. I'm never a big fan of covers, but this has changed me. He had made such subtle little changes, that makes the song hit differently, and gives me a very different feeling. I always liked the song, but this version seems so much more personal to me. I knew John only as a songwriter for awhile, a great songwriter. The performer now is growing on me. I honestly don't think his voice or vocals are anything exceptional. There are a lot of people with voices and vocals. This song is incredible. Friends like that is very different, but it makes me feel a certain way too. John has cemented himself a place in this music scene. Now he's on his way to elevating himself up through the ranks. In country music, I think the few 5 greats standout far above a very crowded group in the middle of guys that were/are good. It's hard to separate from others that were all good. John writes and performed, which means a lot. I'll be cheering him on and supporting him however I can to boost him to that next level.

I had no clue who John Morgan was. Going to a Jason Aldean concert, and he is one of the openers... and im a fan instantly. Right in the Middle, Good with Goodbye, Beer in Town. All great songs. And apparently he has written many hit songs for other artists. But this one... Don Henleys Boys of Summer is in my top 10 favorite songs of all time... and this cover is bone chilling-goose bump nerving good. Damn man. This is awesome. Can't wait for the concert
