He showed much respect for Hagler curing the fight but never came close to knocking Marvelous Marvin down or out, neither did Thomas Hearns. Best ten bucks I ever lost. Hopkins fought when there were multiple champs, and therefore by definition, a weaker selection of contenders. Don't get me wrong, Hopkins was good. I didn't find him exciting/attractive to watch, but he was a pretty special talent.

Super Middleweight made the Middleweight division an afterthought during Hopkins reign n instead of chasing a rematch with Roy Jones or a big money showdown with James Toney he was calling out Welterweights like De La Hoya & Trinidad, it reeked of chickenshitism For a Champion to call out anyone he doesn't have a long standing beef with is disgraceful & proves hes no champion. For a champion to call out someone from a division or 2 divisions below him is beyond disgraceful, its pathetic. Im not talking about answering a question about a good smaller champion n saying he can get it if he moves up in weight, Im talking about ducking a rematch with a man who gave him a humiliating boxing lesson on the biggest stage, has he no pride ? Ducking a showdown with James Toney n restoring his damaged reputation to instead call out, fight & beat smaller men while being undisputed in a division the big guns had long ago left behind, making it a safe place to play. Toney v Hopkins would've been a good one for sure, but by the time Hopkins won a version of the MW title Toney was up around LHW I think... After Jones beat him at SMW. I thought Hopkins often stunk the joint out too, very awkward and unattractive style.

Mugabi was a tough son-of-a-bitch, but he had the misfortune of running into someone just as mean and more skilled in the late, great Marvellous Marvin Hagler. But even Hagler took awhile to finally wear Mugabi out and put him down to stay.

Imagine what Mugabi must have been thinking as he landed his money punches on Hagler and Hagler never flinched. These were punches that had put his other opponents down and out. As the fight wore on Hagler began to wear him down, but it was a war. Hagler had knots on his head after the fight.

Yeah Mugabi gave Hagler a tough fight alright and Hagler felt his power, but Hagler was a different animal, a fully conditioned fighting machine, with steely determination, under rated technical skills, a high workrate, good power and a great chin, so even a prime Mugabi couldn't beat an arguable slipping Hagler. Kind of puts Haglers greatness into perspective, and also how good Mugabi was at this stage.

He then beat a prime welterweight champion who is a top 3 welterweight all time. I have lots of respect for Pryor but prime Duran is a p4p top ten all time fighter. Mugabe was a knockout machine....until he met the ULTIMATE KNOCKOUT machine in Marvelous Marvin Hagler. After Mugabe's knockout loss to Hagler, the beast was no longer the beast, he was seen as a person who could be knocked out, and the fear of him was lessened. Mugabe is proof that Marvin Hagler was one of the GREATEST MIDDLE WEIGHT fighters of all time. He accepted EVERY. SINGLE. CHALLENGE. of all the great fighters during his reign, and beat them all (The Leonard fight don't count. Las Vegas made sure their golden boy won that one...with Leonard's refusal of an immediate rematch as proof the fix was in.....Hagler retired after this debacle).

That fight between marvelous and the beast was a brutal there's not a lot of footage of that fight that you can watch but if you ever get a chance to see that fight you watch that fight again because that was as brutal as any fight I've ever seen and that includes hearns hagler that was a brutal brutal fight over a long period of time

I think Thomas Hearns would’ve smoked Mugabi they way he smoked Duran. He hit Duran and Duran fell face first!! It was Duran’s only KO’d by in his career!! As they were saying at ringside, when they fall face first they don’t get up!! Remember how he smoked Pipino Cuevas who was supposed the power puncher in their encounter. Hearns hit Cuevas that right cross it lifted Pipino’s right leg up off the canvas and sent him reeling back on his left leg trying not to fall. He got knocked out seconds later.

@@crewcab1984rv yeah I'd say that's possible , although I've not studied the careers of fighters like Harry Greb, Bob Fitzsimmons, Sugar Ray Robinson, Tony Gale or Carlos Monzon, but other than Monzon, none of them were champ anywhere near as long as Hagler. I put Hagler above anyone since his reign, largely as non were undisputed for any real period of time, if at all, and most didn't stay at MW as a champ for long at all. Aside BHop and GGG I don't think the others come remotely close.

I'd forgotten just how close Green came to knocking Mugabi out in the 3rd round of their fight. Probably the toughest fighter with that kind of real power himself that Mugabi faced up to that point until he finally ran into the wrecking machine known as Marvellous Marvin.

Lets all keep in mind... Mugabi drank beer in his prime and lots of it. I pay per viewed his fight with Hagler and felt Migabi had the style and punch to topple Hagler. Only 15 dollars ppv can you believe that! Because of Johns natural punching power and lack of elite dicipline imo it was a roadblock to him fully developing all his raw abilities. The narrator aludes to all this and I recall reading about the drinking in various articles of the day back then. So.. Imo a fighter who helped others in need and probably deep down didnt care for hurting people as he needed money. John is a good soul down deep and has always praised Haglers victory unlike someone.... who lost to SRL. Good fighter that imo missed being great for his own reasons. Great TV era of fighters from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s.

Hagler didn't "loose to SLR" he lost to the Las Vegas Box'g Commission. His last fight, and a milestone in a long, long career, and they ripped him off for payback because he blew the whistle and sued the governing bodies to get a title shot.

Neither Hagler nor Mugabi were the same after their fight. ... Don't know if Hearns avoided Mugabi or not, but think he would've had a tough time with him. Hearns was a much better boxer, but was vulnerable to a big puncher. Roldan cuffed him around pretty good before Hearns stopped him, and Barkley KO'd him. And I think Mugabi was a bigger puncher than either. And I was a big Hearns fan.

Thanks for making this. Another great doc! I distinctly remember his rise, the win over Parker was shocking at the time. Not just because Parker was reputed to have steel chin, but that Mugabi hit him with some of the most powerful bombs, flush to the face, I had seen. Then of course came the Hagler fight. The same blows that destroyed other fighters didn't seem to phase Hagler. In the end, Marvin didn't just KO Mugabi, he completely broke him.

After that, even his muscle tone wasn't the same; he was just another boxer... not a beast. Prior to that, even if a guy was well protected with his gloves up... Mugabi would just punch right through all of it. A destroyer in the ring. Hagler deserved a lot of credit for beating him; his last great fight. John Mugabi was possibly the greatest boxer who never won a world title in the last 50 years.

I call him a Universal Soldier. He had it all. Tactics, technique, stamina, firepower, durability, defense, attack. You name it, he had it & he had it all in both stances. Preparing for Hagler was like preparing for at least 4 different fighters 1: Orthodox pressure fighter on a seek & destroy mission 2: Southpaw pressure fighter on a seek & destroy mission. 3: Crafty, streetwise, Orthodox boxer/puncher using the ring & superior tactics to display his superior boxing finesse to systematically slice you up n take you apart piece by piece like a patient piranha fish. 4: Crafty streetwise, Southpaw boxer/puncher using the ring & superior tactics to display his superior boxing finesse to systematically slice you up n take you apart piece by piece like a patient piranha fish. Now consider all of the above n recognize that he isnt goofing off with sparring partners or trying it out for size in regional shows vs local bums, he doing it all at the very highest level vs the very best in the world, under the brightest lights, for the most money in history up until then, so therefore hes doing it all under the highest pressure. So add that to .. 5: He was all of the above n could be either or all of those opponents in one single fight, he could switch it up between rounds. He could switch it up during a single round ! When you're talking about the best Middleweight since 1980, the modern era, you start with Marvin Hagler n try to explain or argue why so n so might be above him. Hagler is the Middleweight *ALL* Middleweights since 1980 are judged by.

@Melvin Deeply Foreman vs Holmes is the one we missed out on. Earnie alwys had a punchers chance but Foreman n Holmes were a cut above him. I met Earnie when he was working as a bouncer in Liverpool. Cool guy once he realized I wasn't an asshole, he talked to me about his career & fighting Muhamad Ali, who he was disappointed never to get a rematch with.

Hearns had suffered that devastating loss to Hagler, he was the one who needed to get his head right, not Mugabi who had KOd everyone he had ever faced until that point. Before his loss to Hagler, Hearns coulda broken him but he had to be carefully rebuilt after it. Mugabi was never successfully refurbished after Hagler dismantled him so he woulda been easy work for the refurbished #Hitman It took Tommy maybe 10 fights including his loss to Barkley to get over his loss to Hagler. Hearns was a warrior, an old school gun slinger, overcoming those Losses n his loss to Leonard n then hunting down rematches against them proves the warrior he is more than any of his wins. Tommy Hearns is a p4p all time great.

@Melvin Deeply Woulda been a great scrap. They're only 2 years apart in age I think. Mid 70s Holmes v Foreman woulda been the fight that Ali was promising to deliver before serving up the rope-a-dope. Holmes up on his toes, doing his Ali impersonation, boxing behind his jab, hitting n moving. Foreman doing his Frankenstein impersonation, walking him down swinging sledge hammers. Woulda been a great scrap. Woulda been a great scrap even in the 90s when both were active. I rekon George KO's Holmes in the 70's but Holmes reasonably comfortably outpoints George in the 90s

Had Mugabi never faced MMH it's possible he would have held the Middleweight title for years. Unfortunately, The Hagler fight destroyed Mugabi physically and psychologically. Thought it came at the end of MMH's glorious career there were few fighters that Hagler levied such a sustained beating on. That beating was Hagler's way of respecting The Beast's power and skill, "Destruction and Destroy".

I met Mugabi once when he csme home to Uganda after fighting Hagler. He gave me his autograph. I am suprised to hear he only spoke Swahili and thst he comes from Tooro(my father's middle name is Mugabi) . Be that as it may Mugabi spoke fluent Luganda at least to me

As a life long John Mugabi fan I have to say this is very good. The only thing is I think Duff insisted on not having thumbless gloves for the Duane Thomas fight. Mugabi was on top and should have won but coming from 195 to 154 in 7 weeks is too much.

Marvelous was robbed you see Leonard didn't want to fight him a second time there's a reason for that go back and watch the fight and you'll see that he whooped Leonard's behine

Sugar Ray Leonard was on his toes the whole fight he was on his bicycle moving he never would stand and fight unless he got up against the ropes and he only really punched in the last minute of the fight trying to steal rounds but the hardest hits and the hardest shots was Marvin hagler hands down watch the fight. I'm a Leonard fan too but the truth is the truth and what is is

I'll never forget that fight with the Beast and Hagler. The only guy I EVER saw hit Marvelous and had him VISIBLY hurt, other than Hearns. And imho, he hurt him worse than Hitman. There will only ever be one BEAST and his name is Mugabi.

Man did they hit hard back then. They also took so many heavy shots. In 50 fights Mayweather never took one shot as hard as some of those guys took in 10 seconds of a round. Fights now are boring.

Mugabi was in deep trouble against James "hard rock" Green but somehow survived and came back to knock out Green, who was actually a good boxer in spite of his short stature. Mugabi always lacked defensive skills and it cost him, first against Marvin Hagler and later in his career as well.

John Mugabi 1983-86 was maybe the greatest fighter who didn't win a world title, of the past 50 years. If you shrunk a prime 228 lb George Foreman down to 5'8"... you would have John Mugabi. Opponents could try to "block" his punches, but Mugabi would just blast through the damn blocks! He destroyed opponents!

Great documentary! In his prime, Mugabi was a Beast, a relentless pressure fighter with devastating power and a solid chin. Imagine Mugabi v Hearns around '84/85! that wouldve been so explosive. He gave Hagler one of his toughest fights, but was ultimately ground down and stopped. Hagler and a lack of discipline pretty much finished him. Although he won the WBC SWW title in' 89, he wasn't the same fighter, Norris and McClellan both KO'd a shot Mugabi in 1, in the early '90s. Still, for 5 years he was an absolute beast, great to be able to relive those years in videos like this. Thanks for posting!
