Nice docmentary. Rubin Carter was the most exciting fighter of his day. He burst onto the scene like Manny Pacquiao would two generations later -- a blur of speed, power, and fury. The only thing that beat Hurricane Carter was his own criminal nature. He was an amazing boxer but a very bad person. Bob Dylan was wrong. Carter did commit the crime he was convicted for, and it's good that he was imprisoned for it.

The Tyson Paul fight went more or less as I thought it would. Other fighters who fought at Tyson's age were not a shadow of what they once were. I'm thinking of Razor Ruddock James Toney Evander Holyfield. Many say the fight was rigged. IMO, if it were, it would've been rigged in Tyson's favor! He's the top dog! An easy KO would practically guarantee a 50 million dollar next fight. Also, I can not imagine that Tyson would agree to a rigged fight wherein he had to look as bad as he did. Clearly Paul didn't go for the kill. Understandable! Mike Tyson has the respect of practically all boxers and fans in the world, including Jake Paul. So the last thing Paul wanted was to KO a 58 years old Mike Tyson, wisely he hold back.

I don't want to be a cranky old man, but it's hard. (I fear it's something we all--a lot of us, anyway--have to be vigilant against.) We old farts aren't the target audience for this stuff. Not everything is about us. We just need to let the kids have their fun, and we don't have to understand it. That's me being magnanimous. Tomorrow I'll be pissed off again, I'm sure.

Valdez losing by quick KO in his next fight to Dana Roston was a real shocker and pretty much killed his career. What i remember most about seeing Valdez fight were his trademark long pink trunks that we wore regularly in his later fights which was unused ring attire for a tough Mexican fighter.

Lenny Valdez looks like one of those fighters who would be a nightmare for some, but would probably get easily beaten by others. Yeah mikes biting was a cue, and the announcer was in on it hence the overboard an inaccurate assessment. I’d bet my house on it. To be honest I don’t want to see anything like that again. I fear we will though because of all the viewers it did receive. I’d also go as far as saying Jake doesn’t really have any talent for boxing. I’ll give him credit for doing the training but 6 years of training and this! I know guys who have started late in life but they had more of a knack for it. And Jake couldn’t fight in a real fight with a stringent sanctioning body…… Simply because of drug testing. I leave that one there.

Rich, I wonder what happened to Jimmy Montoya? He had guys on ESPN almost every week in the 1980’s and maybe early 90’s? Boxing has long been to quote Jimmy Cannon, the red light district of sports. The Tyson Paul fight hit a new low. It seems some people, young fans?, actually took this debacle seriously. It seems some were impressed watching Tyson hit the bag. Not too hard to look good when the bag cannot back. In my opinion a disgusting display.

That's a good question. Last I see of him is that he was training Louisa Hawton but I don't know if that's still the case. He's pretty up there age-wise.

Paul/Tyson was a sham and a gross clickbaity type of approach to the sport. Some of the fights before it weren't too bad however, maybe this will inject some new zazz into the sport. I just want Jake Paul to fight an actual boxer at some point, so his fans can see that he isn't up to spec.

Another great video thanks Rich. I’m sad that the Tyson bout goes down as a pro one. Basically he sold Joke Paul the win. Now he can say on Tyson‘s pro record he beat him. Not sure how that’s possible because aren’t pro fights supposed to use 12 ounce gloves and go three minute rounds? also wondering if it’s illegal as it should be to fix a pro fight

Imo.. * How a fighter looks training does'nt say the whole story, because you can't see what's going on inside of him.A fighter might be just putting on a show, trying to convince people and himself.-- yet deep down, that fighter knows he doesn't have the fighter spirit any longer. *Tyson imo,was biting his gloves because of desperation/anxiety he knew he couldn't win and couldn't find the solution for that ( same psychological reason when he bit Holyfields ear) * Tyson/Paul "fight"was a huge disrespect for boxing. Shameful how the media fed this to the people as a "grand fight" . I had zero interest in watching it--I knew it was a total scam . The only people that benefited were the promoters,"fighters", managers,etc.etc.-- they're laughing all the way to the bank. On a different note..Nice clip Rich !👍 I remember when I saw the Steve Cruz/ Barry McGuigan fight live.-THAT was a shocker.😁 I hope your health is better.

While I don’t think it was “staged” I think there was just mutual nonverbal agreement that Paul wouldn’t beat up mike, looked Paul was just carrying mike and mike was trying to make through the rounds. Definitely not a professional fight just glorified paid sparring

Big win for Valdez, who looked a genuine fighter. Why did he not make it? Hard to say. Got to disagree over the Tyson v Paul "fight". It was odd the way the commentator kept going on about Tyson biting the thumb of his glove, and for sure he overstated it, but I've seen him do it before - one of his last fights, either Danny Williams or Kevin McBride, which I watched after viewing the fiasco at the weekend and I noticed him doing it a few times in one of those. Nowhere near to the extent he that he did against Paul, though. Why was he doing it? Well, it's clearly something he has done in the past and I have to think it was a stress reaction as he looked totally uncomfortable throughout. Probably down to frustration at not being able to land - or even throw - punches. I certainly don't think it was an indicator of anything other than that he was a fish out of water and barely looked like he'd ever boxed before, he was so bad. Re-watching the last fights of his career, in which he was clearly badly faded and had no gas tank at all, not even being able to beat a bum like McBride in 2005, what we saw at the weekend was that guy plus another 19 years of age and inactivity, plus some significant health issues, including problems with his legs. It's OK releasing some brief video clips of him in sparring and hitting the bag, but those were curated to sell the idea that Tyson could have something - anything - left, which he absolutely does not. That's a whole different ball game to being in an actual fight with a guy 31 years your junior, even if that guy was a novice fighter of only moderate ability. It was clear straight off that Tyson could not move, had no speed at all, could get no leverage on his punches and had next to no reflexes left. His timing was non-existent, his reactions glacial, and he had no energy or gas in the tank. Despite doing almost nothing, his breathing was laboured after only a couple of rounds. In against a genuine fighter, even a modest one, he would have been knocked out or stopped within a few rounds. Paul, however, is not a genuine boxer and also has very little power, just arm punches which even this degraded version of Tyson could just about handle. So, no, I don't think there's any reason to believe there was any arrangement here, nothing fishy at all, just a tired old man who's a bit of a physical wreck getting slapped about a bit by a much younger guy.
@RichtheFightHistorian3 күн бұрын
Fair enough. Tyson did do it in the McBride fight.

He is biting his glove to pull up the break leaver so he doesn't get carried away and exedentaly knock out the blondie - it's an honest speculation from me if I had to hypothesize Michael Moorer thought Foreman was old too and he was right but still got outsmarted as I remember watching - ok, it was a serious fight with belts on the line but the momentum of showbiz sitting on a fighter's psyche provaled

Mike is 58 and his last real fight was over 24 years ago . Mike smokes a lot of weed. A lot of that break in boxing , Mike did not train and was very overweight . When you start training again , a lot of what you lost does not come back. Just watch Mike when he walks . He looks like he is going to tip over. No one should be shocked at the out come of this fight. Now what I would love to see ,is Jake fight a top rank heavyweight .Let's see how that works out for him.

Right on rich! I also suspected this was ( Tyson, Paul) staged, choreographed with some real punches they they were allowed to throw, but there's no way they would let an old man like Tyson get beat up! You actually called it right! Your integrity & historical perspective has always led me to continue to come back to your channel. You do awesome work!
