Mulaney was sober from 2005 to 2020. He has 15 years of recovery under his belt. Relapse happens but you don’t lose that clean time experience you had. Everyone’s recovery looks different and as a recovering addict I am proud he got up and talked even laughed about it because you have to! It helps remind you how it was and where you are now and where you are going! Well done John!

Same. I’ve found that it’s so much easier to stay sober when I can go to my support system and say, “I WANT DRUGS, HELP!” Just being able to say it out loud alleviates the pain so much. I’m glad you have support! The wanting never goes away, but it definitely gets easier with time to not scratch the itch. I’ve always compared it to scratching an itch. At first, it’s like having chicken pox and needing pot holders duct taped to your hands, so you don’t scratch. It has now become like feeling a mosquito bite and just being able to put some mental Benadryl on it. It’s also way easier when you have people around who can tell you not to scratch. ❤️

In recovery, I’ve heard it said to newly sober people, “Get a plant, and if it’s still alive after a year, get a dog.” It’s widely advised to not start a relationship in the first two years of recovery, because getting sober is just the beginning of the real work of finding out why you needed the substance and learning other ways to cope without it. That takes time and a dedication that is very energy consuming. I love John and I hope he stays sober and dedicated to healing.

NO ONE has ever recovered without friends, family and community. Without people around you, a relapse is completely guaranteed. We find meaning in relationship. I've been on every side of addiction, and i hope and pray that John and Olivia find every happiness and prove themselves great parents and that he never stumbles... And, if he goes, that it is brief and does not destroy his new world. (If there's any alarm bell for me, it's not John making the choice to be a parent.... That early in rehab, no one is making great decisions. But if I were Olivia, I'd be hella nervous to date him, much less make a baby.)

@rottensquid
@rottensquid Жыл бұрын
@@heatherfeather7199 Totally see what you mean. It's interesting, there's definitely a weird thing about this kind of "my self is the art" artist where the line between lived experience and onstage persona is blurred. As though only by turning himself into this quirky character can he make sense of who he is and what happened to him. Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic explored this idea, blurring the line between the character's lived experience and his self-conscious performance for the documentary of the experience. In the end, there's no way to really separate them, because mugging for the camera is part of who he is. What was interesting about Baby J is how hyper-aware John is on his public persona throughout the story, from the way he puts out the newspaper at the rehab clinic to the way he tries to take control of the narrative at the intervention. He refers to Mulaney in the third person A LOT. But at the end, he makes clear that his final story isn't the worst of it, it's just the worst he's willing to disclose to us. So that's probably a healthy boundary. After all, we still have to like him in order for him to ply his trade. But he's also acknowledging that the person he's been telling us about is only the edited version of who he had become, not a fictionalized rewriting of history.
@UnscannableDrew
@UnscannableDrew 2 жыл бұрын
The hypocrisy of the war on drugs is on full display here. If you're a rich cocaine addict your friends organize an intervention, you go to rehab, and then maybe you get to talk about it as a humorous story on a comedy talk show. If you're a poor cocaine addict you go to jail, then live with the stigma of being an ex-con, possibly felon, for the rest of your live.

For most people, yes, it is difficult to open up about hard things. For John, it seems to be how he likes to deal with his problems. I think he enjoys it. It’s sort of like confession. Mulaney seems like a very genuine guy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a few skeletons in his closet and/or monkeys on his back. These are things that most people keep to themselves. @@bartwilson2513 I do agree. At the same time, John is a celebrity who made the choice to do interviews so soon. Are the comments from some people right? Not at all. Is John fully aware of how the general public treats celebrities and made the choice to do this interview knowing full well people would say all kinds of stuff? Yes. Would his rehab recommend public appearances ontop of all the other stress so soon into his recovery? No. People are gross, but you sadly will never be able to stop them from saying what they want about you. You have to take yourself out of the equation. I doubt, or at least really hope he isn't, John is obsessing over what people are saying about him and reading these comments. some of y’all are like “why is he being so flippant and nonchalant?? he’s gonna relapse.” like he’s a comedian? talking to another longtime friend who’s also a comedian? plus this is an interview which is in some sense a performance, so of course he doesn’t want to be a complete downer. plus, i view joking about something you’ve gone through as a sign that it’s not so raw anymore and has healed a bit, and so looking back you can peel away the parts that hurt to reveal the little funny or odd bits you may have been to sad or numb to feel or recognize. and if people can’t do that self examination then they aren’t growing or maturing, and i think john seems to be very great at self examination.

Obviously I don't know him and I don't know what he's really going through but the jokes he makes do not seem to me the be coming from a healthy place. He seems a little defensive. I spend some time with people going through adiction and he seems to be in the early stages. For him to be in a relationship and to be starting a family so soon is kind of dangerous. Hope everythink works out though, I really like John.

I love John but as an addict (sober 20 years) I have gut feeling that he has a long way to go yet. I remember my journey in the early years...i wanted to conquer my addiction and I had periods of success but I kept relapsing...one thing that struck me here was that when I was clean for a couple of months I used to think talking about it in a 'fun' manner showed that I was in control. But I wasnt...I did it to make other people around me comfortable. I hope I'm wrong. John seems like a great guy and the last guy you'd expect to have a drug problem. Just goes to show there isnt a type.

It might be a comfort to point out that he seems to know this as well. Look at the way he looks at Seth when he says he's glad it's all behind him. This isn't a it's behind you thing. Throughout the conversation he also never describes himself as cured, merely as doing better know. I have some addictive tendencies and haven't struggled through rehab (and hopefully won't have to because I mostly struggle with only cigarettes), but I've read infinite jest and it's a pretty extensive read on dealing with addiction and talking about it. He's definitely still in the danger zone (because I think he'd have to leave Hollywood to be out of it) but it does seem like he's surrounded by people looking after him.

@Kat Ashley I know a recovering addict and he was a complete nightmare when using. He’s super chill and nice now, in recovery. He was acting out a lot of pain from having a bipolar mother. He finally sought treatment and therapy and it was a huge relief. We’re all very happy for him. He is a beloved member of our circle. What I am saying, is that you can still care about, and have compassion for a person even if their addiction is perverting their personality. One must make a distinction between the lost, destructive,, wounded, addicted persona and authentic, pure essence of a person. Life is crazy and messy. People have trauma, mental problems, ADHD, shame. People seek to escape, self-medicate, modulate their brain chemistry. They sometimes fall down the rabbit hole, implode, betray, lie, confound. People wrestle with demons. I don’t engage with active addicts, but I have deep compassion for humanity. “To err is human.” Ps Compassion and empathy are hallmarks of maturity but regardless, I very much appreciated the suggestion to “grow up.” It wax a nice touch.

I have to say, this conversation is super refreshing. The way in which they're talking about this so openly, so non-defensively and laughing- major courage on John's part, so much respect for that- and the way Seth is laughing and not addressing this with a dramatic, heavy tone- this is refreshing to me because it helps so much to laugh about these things, air them out in the open and lighten them, rather than making them heavier and harder with shame, fear, and extra drama. Not ready to lose another amazing talent before his time. We truly are our worst enemies at times. I just believe in him so much and this interview is incredible. Seth Meyers is one of my favorites and it is so obvious that he is a good person and a good friend.

good for him for getting sober and becoming a dad but jesus christ i feel bad for anna not to paint her as a victim or something but your drug addicted husband divorcing you and then getting his new girlfriend pregnant and then talking about the whole ordeal publicly has gotta be a stab to the heart

Yeah maybe. Maybe she was a big part of why he had a problem in the first place which is why he divorced her. Point being, no one actually knows anything so why does anybody talk about any of it as if it's their business. Who cares. Let them all live their lives instead of talking about them.

@Ben DoverSeeing as they both spent the past spring in inpatient treatment programs (for addiction and for mood and eating disorders, respectively), it's fair to say that neither John nor Anna were victims of the other, but rather simply two flawed, struggling, well-meaning, mistake-making humans.

I'm worried about his Ex-Wife right now. He joked all the time about how he didn't want kids, said how much he loved her everywhere and now he's having a baby and she stays silent about it all out of respect for his career. I'm really happy for John but I think these news are surely tough for his ex wife as well

Agreed. I feel like there's a lot going on behind the scenes and I know that it's his job to be in the public eye, but I really wish he hadn't been so public about it.

First thing I thought of, he was 'happy" on Colbert show I think and said he wasn't ready for kids with Jerry Seinfeld but now, he is. I hope he is happy but his ex must feel awful.

“They’re great, but I love what I do,” the 39-year-old candidly said of kids at the time. “And I love my wife and spending so much time with her and we have a really fortunate life. I get to travel, do stand-up, and our relationship is so wonderful. It’s just something I wouldn’t want to change." Addiction changes a lot and I'm sad he suffers so much but I also hope that child will be loved and it's not a trigger to go back. He's lucky he has great friends.
