I’m glad you have support! The wanting never goes away, but it definitely gets easier with time to not scratch the itch. I’ve always compared it to scratching an itch. At first, it’s like having chicken pox and needing pot holders duct taped to your hands, so you don’t scratch. It has now become like feeling a mosquito bite and just being able to put some mental Benadryl on it. It’s also way easier when you have people around who can tell you not to scratch. ❤️

@rottensquid Жыл бұрын
@@heatherfeather7199 Totally see what you mean. It's interesting, there's definitely a weird thing about this kind of "my self is the art" artist where the line between lived experience and onstage persona is blurred. As though only by turning himself into this quirky character can he make sense of who he is and what happened to him. Wes Anderson's Life Aquatic explored this idea, blurring the line between the character's lived experience and his self-conscious performance for the documentary of the experience. In the end, there's no way to really separate them, because mugging for the camera is part of who he is. What was interesting about Baby J is how hyper-aware John is on his public persona throughout the story, from the way he puts out the newspaper at the rehab clinic to the way he tries to take control of the narrative at the intervention. He refers to Mulaney in the third person A LOT. But at the end, he makes clear that his final story isn't the worst of it, it's just the worst he's willing to disclose to us. So that's probably a healthy boundary. After all, we still have to like him in order for him to ply his trade. But he's also acknowledging that the person he's been telling us about is only the edited version of who he had become, not a fictionalized rewriting of history.

I love John but as an addict (sober 20 years) I have gut feeling that he has a long way to go yet. I remember my journey in the early years...i wanted to conquer my addiction and I had periods of success but I kept relapsing...one thing that struck me here was that when I was clean for a couple of months I used to think talking about it in a 'fun' manner showed that I was in control. But I wasnt...I did it to make other people around me comfortable. I hope I'm wrong. John seems like a great guy and the last guy you'd expect to have a drug problem. Just goes to show there isnt a type.
@necordektox8793 жыл бұрын
Yes, and it's especially bad because his job is to make people laugh, so when he jokes about his addiction it's natural to laugh, but you know it's just a coping mechanism.
It might be a comfort to point out that he seems to know this as well. Look at the way he looks at Seth when he says he's glad it's all behind him. This isn't a it's behind you thing. Throughout the conversation he also never describes himself as cured, merely as doing better know. I have some addictive tendencies and haven't struggled through rehab (and hopefully won't have to because I mostly struggle with only cigarettes), but I've read infinite jest and it's a pretty extensive read on dealing with addiction and talking about it. He's definitely still in the danger zone (because I think he'd have to leave Hollywood to be out of it) but it does seem like he's surrounded by people looking after him.

@@EmpyreanLightASMR There are plenty of kind words in this comment section. "Kindness" does not always mean "positivity." Mulaney is in his first year out of rehab, and the first year is very fragile. You're not supposed to make _any_ big life changes, and Mulaney has made at least three, some of the biggest life changes one can make, in fact. Stating concern for that or acknowledging that it's basically a bomb of a situation waiting to explode is not "mean" or "unkind." Just the opposite, it is the most kind to tell someone you like and love that you think they're making a bad decision. Think of it this way; if you were about to step over a cliff, would you prefer someone say "I'm scared for you, please reconsider" or "Go for it, you can do it"? One of these is a kind thing to do. @violetgc60493 жыл бұрын
@Kat Ashley I know a recovering addict and he was a complete nightmare when using. He’s super chill and nice now, in recovery. He was acting out a lot of pain from having a bipolar mother. He finally sought treatment and therapy and it was a huge relief. We’re all very happy for him. He is a beloved member of our circle. What I am saying, is that you can still care about, and have compassion for a person even if their addiction is perverting their personality. One must make a distinction between the lost, destructive,, wounded, addicted persona and authentic, pure essence of a person. Life is crazy and messy. People have trauma, mental problems, ADHD, shame. People seek to escape, self-medicate, modulate their brain chemistry. They sometimes fall down the rabbit hole, implode, betray, lie, confound. People wrestle with demons. I don’t engage with active addicts, but I have deep compassion for humanity. “To err is human.” Ps Compassion and empathy are hallmarks of maturity but regardless, I very much appreciated the suggestion to “grow up.” It wax a nice touch.

The more I learn about Seth Meyers, the better he seems. He's always gone out of his way to showcase his friends' talents. He gives credit to his writers, he has supported Amber's show, and he gives Wally a chance to shine and probably make more money by being on air. He is absolutely the type of guy who would help plan an intervention for his friend and then stick close to him to make sure he doesn't relapse. Mulaney is a super talented guy that any show would be lucky to have when he's sober, but I feel like Seth is the one who would take him on in any condition, just to have him nearby. I understand that Seth didn't recognize the problem as soon as he could have because he needed an outside perspective, but giving John that segment when he wasn't at his best probably saved his life. Once the audience pointed out that he seemed off it sounds like Seth and their other friends took a step back and made the realization that probably saved his life. I'm glad that such a genuinely good person has this platform and these resources. There are so many complete and utter dicks in the entertainment industry. It's nice to see the good guy get ahead. Mulaney seems like a genuinely nice person with a lot of love to give too, but he's got to love himself. Most addicts hurt people when they're caught up in their disease, and the nice ones tend to dwell on the guilt so much that it drives them back to it. I hope he has genuinely come out the other side of this, but this seems like a critical time that will make or break him.

Incredible stress on recovery, yes. Ideal situation? Absolutely not. But since we don’t know a whole bunch about his journey or the exact timing of everything that went down, not sure how much planning was involved. Wouldn’t be the first “accident”. Depending on how he frames this, the works he puts in, and the support he has, it can and has worked out OK. Being on the receiving end of harsh criticism and judgement definitely undermines recovery.
@iloveyourunclebob3 жыл бұрын
@@bartwilson2513 I do agree. At the same time, John is a celebrity who made the choice to do interviews so soon. Are the comments from some people right? Not at all. Is John fully aware of how the general public treats celebrities and made the choice to do this interview knowing full well people would say all kinds of stuff? Yes. Would his rehab recommend public appearances ontop of all the other stress so soon into his recovery? No. People are gross, but you sadly will never be able to stop them from saying what they want about you. You have to take yourself out of the equation. I doubt, or at least really hope he isn't, John is obsessing over what people are saying about him and reading these comments. I don't approve of the majority of things people are saying about him, but they aren't me and they aren't you. We aren't them to change their minds and delete the paragraph before posting it. You know? I wish we lived in a world where empathy was more of a thing. We don't. We have to remove ourselves from situations like this for our own sake. All addicts deal with the court of public opinion, mainly family and friends for the average person, on some level. John unfortunately is at a major level. But that takes radical honesty. I'll be honest. I like cocaine a lot. I do it maybe once every 6 months. Usually to do a deep clean of my apartment. Never gotten addicted or used daily. Never had any negative associated with it whatsoever. That's my story. The sort of story you just don't hear, that is never talked about. Coke....it's great for spring cleaning. I got to see John's new show this past weekend in Vegas and I must say, he has some amazing friends. The intervention Seth was apart of truly saved John's life, and I'm so happy for how this year has turned around for him! But I'm also thinking of Anna at this time, I can't imagine how she must be feeling. I wish the best for them both!!!

Perhaps they will go forward and save what they can from that relationship. That would be awesome.

Right thank u! Yes its great John sorted his life but I feel for his ex. Its like im going to rehab...also ok divorcing u...also I have a new girlfriend...also shes pregnant. Poor Anna must be in a tailspin. Unless she's the reason he ended up on drugs (which nothing suggested it was they always seemed to have a good relationship) then that poor lady has had a hell of a year

@@mamacito1795 I believe John has battled addiction since before his relationship with Anna. She ended up going to rehab herself last winter, although for different issues. I'm rooting for both of them, even if they're better apart than together. Sometimes that's just the way it goes.

How incredible humanized and compassionate. I am happy to see people have honest conversations on shows that tend to only portray the “bubbly happy” side of everything. I never knew John was struggling with drugs but I am glad to hear he is doing better now. I hope it continues this way.

@@mbarry415 your pretty much on point here. As someone who went through some addiction struggles I can confirm that yeah, often times it “takes one to know one.” My family and coworkers who weren’t familiar with drugs didn’t pick up on it. I think sometimes they knew I was “a bit off” but couldn’t pinpoint it…but anyone I knew who were familiar with “partying” themselves at some point or another can spot each other from a mile away.

John is so extremely lucky to have someone as special as Seth in his life. I wish John and his new family all the best. Anyone who provides laughter is a gift from the Heavens. I'd also like to thank Seth's parents for doing a outstanding job in raising that boy. 😁👍

1: Seth is an awesome human being and everyone should be fortunate enough to have a friend like him. 2: John is a truly funny person and a fantastic writer. I sincerely hope he at some point gets a lasting handle on his addiction. It’s sad to lose intellectuals, artists and humanitarians to self inflicted wounds 3: This would have been a completely wonderful interview, if there was not a baby about to be born into a posh version of chaos. 4: All good thoughts to all involved
@lenkacfk71553 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those were my first thoughts, too - is getting sober and being in the honeymoon phase of a new relationship really the best time to add the stress of having a baby? It feels like maybe they should have waited to see if the relationship holds, and let John settle into his post-addiction routine, before adding such a huge stress factor. Though maybe that will give him a reason to stay sober - let's hope for the best.

One of the first things you are taught when newly sober is not to make any big changes for the first year. But apparently Mulaney continues to try & prove he’s the smartest boy in the room - can’t tell him anything. Divorce, new relationship, baby on the way. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. He had better have a good sponsor and be doing his meetings or he’s going to crash and burn fast.

Dude this is genuinely amazing. Two people on national television talking about an issue a lot of people go through, whether that be on John’s or Seth’s end, and working thru the issue together rather than alienating the person struggling with addiction.
