@@sailormagic13 Well John says his self that he's a writer at heart not a performer and I think thats true. I mean stand up is a performance and he has great stage presence but he's not the best at playing a wide range of different characters (he's improved but at the time probably way too limited) Picking him for a writer made perfect sense. Nick Kroll is a good actor and he can do a million different characters, so i agree them not picking him for a cast member is odd but alot of things factor into who they pick I guess.

Assuming you have not yet seen this, I'm gonna link here (and also put the link randomly on a comment section for others who ''seek'' to overcome depression by watching SNL sketches) the documentary about the SNL creating process, that can be entertaining and informative as well, made by James Franco. Honestly, I did not even knew such thing exist, but the insight into the whole process from the time when Seth was a head writer and Higgins was a producer and Hader / Mulaney's chemistry is clearly palpable even before John came up with Stefon e c.t. has made me (for an hour and a half) not to think about the global pandemic and the 2020 daily playlist. I know it's unfair to comedians to expect them to never reuse material, particularly when it's good, but it does get tiresome when you already know the punchline and for some reason it's different than just rewatching a joke being told when it's in a different setting. Kid Gorgeous was a bit disappointing for me because I'd watched Hilarity for Charity specifically for John, so when KG was released and I realized I'd already heard some of its best jokes, it was just a slight bummer.

I have a friend named Kennedy Prasser but my nickname for him is John because though blonder, he reminds me a lot of this guy. We work together but not in the same area and I called him John again in the warehouse and he said, "Mulaney right?" This was after months of me randomly calling him John with no explanation. I said, "Yeah, of course." Then he said, "Ok."

I have seen all the other SNL stories and for me this is the one that feels the most genuine.

I feel like I’ve never really heard his non-comedian voice before until this video. This is like John Mulaney in lowercase

So true. Watch some of his interviews with Sam Jones (search KZbin for Mulaney Sam Jones) - very relaxed, not so much "ON" and performing. Really nice.

lol it’s weird right? comedians sound so different not performing

"Look in the camera and let your face relax." This is not an understatement, that's the single best piece of universal advice (re: being in front of camera) I have ever heard.

For your seemingly tireless efforts that have made me and countless others laugh and reflect throughout the years, Mulaney ... I.ll stay another year. Thank you.

These are great stories. Everyone’s interested in how shobiz works and SNL is truly legendary, and these stories are pretty candid. This one was glorious. Everyone works so hard there and gets burned the hell out but then years later they miss it more than anything. That’s nature.

1:08 I remember Bobby doing this character at the end of his first episode. He was a waiter kinda dressed like a pirate/fortune teller/member of Smash Mouth and It was hilarious.
