John was and is a very underrated guitarist. I am a musician (of German and Scandinavian lineage lol) and have followed John and Europe for many years. I read in a previous comment about his neoclassical feel from this era. I have to agree that from around '84 to '90 was when it was really evident. Norum is often compared to Malmsteen, who Is a virtuoso as well, but john didn't give a fuck about theory. He just played what felt right.

I think John Norum is the missing link between Gary Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. He has a highly melodic style and plays with passion and intensity, but he also has the speed and technical skills to just shred if he wanted do. Plus, let 's not forget that, like Gary Moore, he's always been an awesome lead guitarist who could sing well also. I agree that he's an underrated guitarist. I know that he has many fans who have followed his career, and he''s definitely a highly respected guitarist, but he's not someone who shows up on those lists of top guitarists. Also, his tone when he primarily played his Strat was phenomenal.

"Norum is often compared to Malmsteen, who Is a virtuoso as well, but john didn't give a fuck about theory. He just played what felt right." This is a strange comment, because it implies that Yngwie is some kind of theory geek, when they're both pretty much in the same boat. Yngwie leans towards a more baroque-sounding approach, whereas Norum is more like Schenker. They both played, and play, what feels right.

@@avocate2017 Gary was also pretty shreddy when need to, but very sloppy, so what I think he missed more was to be more clean while playing fast.
