My wife (we’re American, BTW) got upset with me when I didn’t give as big a sh*t as she thought I should have about the previous royal wedding, pregnancy, and birth. I told her good for them and much happiness, but it wasn’t something that really affected my life or hers. I told her it was unfortunate that everyone expected them to produce an heir immediately after tying the knot. Like the Royal Family needs to exist indefinitely or civilization will crumble. I compared our US version of royalty (which is merely wealth and/or celebrity) and asked would she be broken-hearted if Paris Hilton or someone in her lifestyle circle turned out to be sterile. Would she care? I told her it’s all about the money and having offspring to pass it on to. The biggest fear of the wealthy is not only losing their money, but losing it to someone they consider “unworthy.” My wife said there was no talking to me sometimes.

@razmataz13drums7 жыл бұрын
i think he was going to say that programmes like the Crown foster good will to the monarchy because it allows you to view the royal family as that, a family, rather than an archaic institution. it is of course both, so those things are a weird thing. On one side, the queen, Will and harry have the roles of ambassadors which personally I view them to be doing a good job at. On the other, the monarchy represents an outdated system that allows one family to be filthy rich with tax paying money. BUT they dont exactly choose that life, and they do lots to generate money, interest and good will. Losing the monarchy would be like gaining a tail- it would be weird and arbitrary, but we'd get used to it
@TheTardisDreamer7 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, though The Crown humanises the Royal family, the showrunner isn't for the monarchy. He recently called the Queen a woman of limited intelligence and was pretty brutal about it too. I was a little shocked, given how the show does a pretty good job showing them in a fair light.

@@razmataz13drums Democracy is as old as Monarchy, if not even more. And within the fact that a constitutional monarchy is very efficient as an institution the most advanced argument for keeping is about traditions and culture. It works brilliantly because it act as a balance, the power is shared between the elected government and the Crown, both of them keeping each other in check thus no abuse can be made. Interesting and controversial isn't ? To need a non democratic system to avoid abuses of the same said system.

Thank-you John Oliver! Although it's more like if Seth Myers had a tail paid for by the British tax payer, and the tail owned several palaces and castles with 1000's of acres of land that could be used for something better than housing a useless tail. Although many people said the tail was worth it because it brought in tourist money, they just hadn't thought it through properly.
@quarkwrok7 жыл бұрын
Which you haven't. As much as I don't care about the monarchy, I have to point out your analogy omits the income to the taxpayers from said castles, palaces, land etc., that the costs to the taxpayer includes costs of maintenance of those assets that would still be needed if the monarchy no longer existed or the ownership was in state hands, and the fact that the land is owned personally by the royal family has nothing to do with restrictions in planning. Exactly what would you expect the land to be developed as anyway?
@MrMigeco7 жыл бұрын
The land could be developed or used in any way we deemed fit. Are you suggesting it's useless land that could not be used? And yes those castles and palaces would still need to be paid for, this could be done in tourist money, much like Versailles.
@quarkwrok7 жыл бұрын
In the UK there is immense pressure on land for development of all kinds. Land is designated by type no matter who owns it, i.e. brownfield, National Park, Scenic Beauty, Special Scientific Interest, Green Belt etc. Land that can developed economically has been. Housing, mining, roads etc. You can pretty much bet the land owned by Queenie and her peeps has been developed to the full already. Meanwhile, some of us are trying to protect the environment, not pave it over. its an overcrowded heavily urbanised industrial island, not some chocolate box christmas card of pretty cottages and country lanes. Maybe we should get rid of the monarchy just to get rid of outdated inaccurate stereotypes about Merry Old! The royals only own a small amount of it anyway. The tourist money for the palaces goes to the state already. Would be interesting to see what the costs of the royal family would be minus the maintenance costs. A few £million? Wouldn't take much of a drop in tourists to wipe that out. And if we're turning the figureheads into normal citizens, should we let them have the land and castles back - and allow the income - or make an example of them. Or maybe just take the assets or any [possible income off anyone we don't like or anyone too rich. Sounds fair but is it right?

Not only tourism, the royals also turn over the profit from their privately owned land to the parliament every year in return for parliament covering the royal expenses (which is a lot less than what the parliament receives from these privately owned lands). John Oliver is one of my favorite Americans with a British accent. Although, we don't for sure if he's an American or not. He's married to one, but he could have his American citizenship, but he could not. The concept of a Royal family it's a bit ridiculous at best. Why would you have monarchy instead of democracy? Of course things have changed through the centuries in the UK, but still. You had smart ass man with some money to buy a small army and declare himself king of the hill by force, then give away lands to his cronies, and have the people living in those lands pay taxes to him or else, pay taxes on crops, or give them to the king and keep some for him and his family just to survive, and it goes on and on and on Then, from the money extorted from all those people build castles and manors. and art. Finance wars to steal from other kings and lands, etc... But, many people are proud of all the castles and the art these families accumulated as if it is a real national treasure. In the Middle Ages they should have followed the Greek's style of democracy not monarchies. But here we are feeding up that illusion.

OK, so, the Royal Family have next to no true power, they are a symbolic head of state. The United Kingdom is a democracy and has been for hundreds of years, literally longer than the USA has existed. Parliament has the power in the UK, and each of the members are democratically elected.

Charlie Lambert Thanks for explaining that. So, you guys are supporting the monarchy just for the fun of it. Who maintains all those castles (and their entourage) where they live and they stay for a few weeks every once in a while? Do they own land or the land is own by the people? Do they have privileges that you don't have? If you guys are happy with the monarchy, more power to you.

Charlie Lambert - the UK is a democracy where most of the voted are ignored (most seats are won with less than 50% of the votes thanks to multiple candidates standing in each seat). Its a very bad example of democracy, almost as bad as the USA. Its easily improved too, just unite 5 (say) seats together, they still have 5 MP's but the votes are joined together and anyone who gets 20% of the vote gets a seat. Much more representative, much more democratic and far few votes ignored.

3:36: “There’s a non-zero chance of the world ending.” 3:46: “It’s the fact that our current president has us on a death path.” John Oliver is a genius. Jesters have always been the truth-sayers.

are some Americans excited because it finally feels like vindication for the whole Wallis and Edward thing? Genuine question
@Sekii19947 жыл бұрын
Don't be fatuous, Jeffrey I feel like most black Americans are excited bc of it. Here in Europe, no one really cares.. especially about her ancestry
@donfelipe75107 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're totally right about that, Americans are always obsessed with ancestry it seems, I didn't actually realise she was part African-American until it was mentioned on the news. As for the Wallis and Edward thing, they weren't allowed to marry and be King and Queen because she was a divorcee not because she was American. Megan Markle is also a divorcee but it's different times now. I think people recognise that divorce is often a good thing rather than be stuck in an unsuitable or abusive relationship just because it's socially unacceptable to get a divorce. I'm British and not too bothered about the royal engagement but the message it sends out is quite a good one I think.

Why do Europeans continue to believe they are above racism?

Another difference is that Harry is like 5th in line after his brother and two sons, so not like that part matters much at that point

ok it's making more sense now, thankyou. I didn't know all the details. I'm in Australia and (admittedly I'm not that in touch with some tv shows, or royal goss) I really wasn't familiar with Meghan Markle or her background.
