I think there's a 90% chance they stuck her with a needle of coke and morphine, as they did for her predecessors, (and is quite well known, nothing "alleged" about it) in order to get the timing right and "ease her suffering" as she was surely done for. Frankly nothing wrong with that except everyone should get the same dignity and free drugs, not just benevolent dictators. I expect in 5 or 10 years it will come out in the news to the shock of only the most naive. And it is sort of no one else's business anyway, but we'll want to read it, that gossip being 90% of the value of the royals at this point anyway.

I can understand the "forced mourning" from when I was stationed in Okinawa when Emperor Hirohito died and we were required to wear dark colors, be quiet etc even as Shinto Monks were dancing in the streets wearing red. Okinawa is technically part of Japan but the native Okinawans suffered greatly through the years under Japanese's rule.

We were lucky enough to John Oliver perform live years ago and the off-the-cuff riffs were by far the most hilarious and memorable parts. One of the many things I love about John Oliver is his incredible chemistry with EVERY SINGLE OTHER late night host. There's no tension like with Conan and Colbert. Seth, Colbert, Kimmel, whoever. They all love interviewing him and it's always a blast.

That's why, among other things, I love John. He's one of the few people that doesn't revere to the British monarchy. I am tired of the media coverage of billionaire monarchs. Monarchy is anachronistic.

Correlation is not causation but it is noticeable that most of the countries regularly ranked highest for happiness, freedom, democracy etc are constitutional monarchies. Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands plus of course New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. Having a figurehead head of state separate from politics may well result in a greater willingness to demand more from the politicians. In countries like the USA the President is revered and there is a tendency to view criticism of the POTUS and criticism of the country. In a constitutional monarchy we can freely criticise our political leaders without that worry. The USA has an elected President/head of state. The UK has a powerless King but has universal healthcare, gun control, the right to abortion, birth control, gay marriage etc. Given the choice I'm happy I live in the UK.

​@@karlbassett8485 As you say, correlation does not equal causation, because I would assume the main cause of what you're describing is that nations with constitutional monarchies tend to be very old, and have generations of stealing other nation's wealth to create stability. That absolutely includes the US, which does not have healthcare etc., I certainly wish we did. But I think there are more pertinent differences between the US and the other nations you list than it not being a constitutional monarchy, such as the US's huge population and the population's diversity, financial and otherwise. It's hard to get the US to agree to much of anything, largely because of our culture's focus on individualism which I'm not a huge fan of, but I also think it's worth remembering how many people are in the US compared to those other countries. 331 million people cannot really compare to the other countries on your list.

@@hajarmdn4883 1) the Presidential system, especially the US one costs way more than the European monarchy with the most pomp, the British. 2) Taxes are paid. There are 3 categories. A) “Crown” holdings - This is valued at 40 billion. It has estates and palaces and Crown Jewels which are owned by the crown. The family doesn’t own any of this personally. They are entitled to profits from crown estate (but have been giving 85% of it to the government for a 15% salary) and cash use the jewels and palaces but in their duty as head of state. They can’t pass it on to others, sell it off or loan it. B) Duchy (Estate lands) of Lancaster and York - they are also owned by the crown and managed by a government controlled trust for future monarchs and will go to the monarch/heir. No one else can claim it. They can’t be salami sliced and sold for personal profits. Capital gains must be reinvested in the estate by law. The monarch/heir can get the profits. They also pay income tax on those profits (the highest bracket). C) Private property - They include artwork, cars, jewels and a couple of palaces. These can go from Elizabeth II to anyone. If anyone apart from Charles gets it, they’ll have to pay inheritance tax. The current sovereign need not. And of course if the Sovereign Grant is stopped (that 15%), by law they can just take up the 40 billion... They are subsidising the taxpayer tbh. What the UK Royal family eats up in tax (less than 2 pounds) is made up by the millions they bring in via tourism and their brand. Do you see the Irish or German President get this much press when they die in office? Heck here you and I are talking about the queen while we most likely don’t even know the names of those heads of state. 3) As if the US President doesn’t give medals.. oh wait they don’t.. they just appoint their loyalists as Supreme Court Justices.

Part of the sadness people in the UK are feeling is, in losing a public figure who has been there for so many years, a reminder that the current tory 'goverment' are stripping away basic things like a functioning health service or quality schools or "luxuries" like not having raw sewage pumped into rivers and onto beaches or the right to protest. Did any viewers of this show know that the tories recently changed the law so that (and I cannot stress this enough: this REALLY is true) they can strip you of citizenship and without you even being informed? Basic tenets of the basic decencies and standards of, what Brits used to feel was, a free democracy. So many things have been undone or weakened and attacked by these right-wing, corporation loving hoo-rahs. (And) the passing of Queen Liz 2 highlights how the UK is being undermined and things that were valued for much of her time and now under real threat. It's.......sad to see. 🤷‍♂️

John Oliver is hilarious, but as I have heard him say on more than one occasion, the other late night hosts have to hit the ground running on Mondays, coming up with multiple segments and interviews several days a week, and sometimes, they have to change something practically last minute. That does make a difference. I think it would be fun if John and Seth switched, with John doing one of the nights ACL is on and Seth doing one of John’s shows. Then, they could do a short meet up on one of Seth’s shows and spend some time laughing about the experience.

The best thing to happen to American Late Night shows is John Oliver. Why you ask? It's that humour from a British person is far more digestible when it comes to real news topics. There is a natural cynicism mixed with self-deprecation, and a necessary, albeit, blunt delivery from Brits that American humorists don't have. They don't need to be loved like American hosts. They will tell you the truth regardless. They can go from funny to serious on a penny (or dime) and not lose pace or attention with the audience. Love from Australia, John! 🇦🇺
