I love the design and the vise you used to determine the best diffuser / LED strip distance. I learned a lot in this video. Keep up the great work!

John, this is an awesome build, thanks for the video. My son is a speed cuber (geekbrag-we built a Rubik's cube solving lego robot once, very fun project) and I would love to take something like this small scale, to sit table top. There are already standard palm activated timers and large displays, but it would seem like using the neopixels, you could create a self enclosed mini system, on the cheap. If you have the time or inclincation to pursue something like this, I would love to see a tutorial on it. I'm sure you get lots of requests, just thought I would throw it out there. Irrespective, love all your work, I appreciate all the great content--I'm strongly considering trying to build one of your mystery crates, very cool stuff.

Michael, that's really cool, I'm flabbergasted by speed cubers! You should be able to scale down my project without too much difficulty -- the only thing that wouldn't scale uniformly on the CAD files is the NeoPixel cutouts. But you could make one half sized by cutting 4-LED instead of 8-LED strips, for example. Thanks for your kind words -- LMK if you build a mystery crate or do the cube timer!

Very professional project. Thanks for the detailed review. That box is an Orbit 57095 if anyone is interested.
@JohnParkMakes7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Do you use these boxes for CNC builds? Looks like they're popular among people who set up wifi hotspots as well.
@Neo7CNC7 жыл бұрын
I have an arduino project I'm working on and I thought this box would be perfect. Not sure if there's enough room for all the CNC bits that I usually use in a controller. I'm definitely going to test drive one with the arduino project though.

Nice and tidy project! You could use an optical gate for the start. A simple laser diode and you can use an LED as the cheap receiver as it generates a voltage when you shine a laser on it.

I'm just doing this kind of proyect, havent finished yet. The difference is that im using the backlight layer of damaged LCD monitors and side lightning with just 2 neopixel per segment
@JohnParkMakes7 жыл бұрын
That sounds really great, please post some photos.
@jotatsu7 жыл бұрын
Here you go goo.gl/photos/KiEP9Bc9RQNLJzVR6 . It's not very clear in the photos , i'm using thin craft aluminium sheets for support and for reflecting the light on the sides. There is some light leakage on the tips of the segments, mainly because those are not perfectly flat (not using laser), but its acceptable, light output is good and uniform.

Nicely done, those are looking great. Is the monitor backlight under a sheet of wood with the segment shapes cut out?

That's awesome as always John!.A few years ago I made something very simmilar, but using regular RGB led's for a friend's Gym, to be used in a Crossfit kind of routine. I'll see if I can put it all together and maybe make a tutorial about it. All the best from Argentina!!

hey John- I'm a novice at this sort of stuff but would like quick advice for a kinda-sorta related project. I want to create a stopwatch system that is triggered by two wireless buttons(one to trigger the start and one to stop). what sort of technology stack would you suggest?
@JohnParkMakes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Arthur, sounds cool! I would try a set of RFM69 Packet Radio Feather boards to do that, especially if long distances or obstructed paths are involved. Here's a project I did with those: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKStoHd9ic-Fpq8 So, you could have three of these -- one for start, one for stop, and the third one is getting those signals and controlling the timer.

@adafruit2 жыл бұрын
Code is here: learn.adafruit.com/ninja-timer-giant-7-segment-display/timer-code you can extend this to more digits, just make sure your power supply provides enough current for the added NeoPixels.
