Depending on your responsibilities, a job like that can be either easy or extremely stressful. Setting up guitars, tuning quickly is easy, but when an amp blows, or a single patch cable goes bad, or there's an unidentified hum suddenly out of nowhere... it gets stressful
@ChaptermasterPedroKantor-kv5yw7 күн бұрын
Thing is, these big touring musicians can afford to take a big complicated rig on the road that us lesser gods could never do, if only because we have to haul it around ourselves, while John lets his guitar tech and roadie do all the work. So you get all the stress of making it all work, deal with Murphy creating catastrophic rig failures, tube amps being transported all over the world to different climates. Besides getting all the guitars ready for the next song you may even have to double in doing footswitch duty on the rig as the talent walks all over the stage. So if it works, it will probably be fun. But there's a reason why there are backup units in that rig.

Question, when I was at Radio City in ‘06 JP lost signal before the solo on “UAGM”, they obviously edited that song for the “Score” recording but I never heard the story of what happened. If you watch the DVD during the first verses and chorus you can see MP looking over to stage left like “Whats up with the guitar?” And JP was off stage for a pretty long time and right before the solo he walked back out and the guitar was working. It was wild. Also in NYC on TOT the entire PA went off during “This Dying Soul”. I was front row and could hear stage volume but the PA was off for about ten or fifteen seconds. Live music really is LIVE!

Here's the electric guitar signal chain without the switcher stuff: wireless, rack wah, Keeley compressor, Maxon/Fortin overdrive, Keeley California Girls 12-string simulator, TC Dreamscape flanger, MXR EVH phase 90, Boss Dimension c waza, TC Viscous Vibe, (signal splits here to dual mono), TWO MXR chorus pedals each feeding their own Mesa Boogie JP2C amp. Effects loop of both amps (L and R) go into a mixer and these effects come back into mixer channels in parallel: TC 2290 for delay or flanger, Axe FX for delays/harmonizer, TC 2290 pedal (as backup) and Boss SDE-3000 EVH delay. Mixer output to JP2C effects returns.

@ I’m not surprised he’s no longer using the Mimiq. I used one about 7 years ago for the double-tracking vibe and it just felt too loose. I’ve tried all kinds of stereo widening things (chorus, dc2w, detune, stereo reverb, etc) but I hadn’t thought of two parallel choruses!
@josephfigueroa35277 күн бұрын
I'm curious as to why he uses a mixer to do all that.
@typangtv7 күн бұрын
@ probably because the analog signal path with effects mixed in parallel has less (no) latency and sounds better
@MKRISING757 күн бұрын
He says the 2290 does a 7 millisecond split what does that do kinda like a wider effect like detune? Dual mono is what he is doing what is the difference between that and stereo? This stuff is fascinating 🤟🏻

John gets paid to play them though. Plus he has a financial incentive to sell these. Most young bands are skipping over them unless they get lucky enough to get sponsored.
@josephfigueroa35277 күн бұрын
@matthewduncan9405 I'm pretty sure he doesn't get paid to play them. He gets a royalty per signature item that gets sold. I think young bands gravitate away from big rigs due to the fact that most of them don't have a van to haul their shit.

I've recently put together a compact pedalboard with the bare minimum and no switcher. IMO it just sounds better. I have 6 pedals in a chain in front of the amp and 2-3 in the loop. I sounds better and I get autofeedback at low volume. It's really so much better I'm probably going to sell my ES-8 or just us it as a controller and run all of my front pedals on the floor and midi to control my rack stuff and pedals in the rack.
