I have been a fan of John's music for 48 years now. There is nobody else out there like he was. Nobody. He wrote and performed so many great songs, unique songs, songs you couldn't ever fully enjoy unless you listened to every word of them. His wit, compassion and passion came through on all of them. He was one of those rare songwriters who could make you laugh and cry on one song, sometimes on one line. He sang about people - people who were so dissimilar to himself but for whom he had great sympathy or empathy. When he was very young he wrote about lonely old folks (Hello in There), a disenchanted middle-aged woman (Angel from Montgomery) and the destruction and razing of his grandparents' home town for the sake of a strip mine (Paradise). He also wrote about love, lost love, troubled love, rejection and longing. And while some of those topics might sound depressing, he usually made you laugh in the middle of it. And he threw in some satirical songs reserved for his country, which had sometimes offended his left-leaning politics. He was a treasure, and is often referred to as a "National Treasure." I certainly think he was. And although I never met the man, I have read countless accounts from people who did - ordinary fans. He never failed to be kind and friendly to those who recognized him on the street, and sometimes would invite them to share a meal or a drink with him. He'd pose for a photo or share an autograph with fans, and I never read of anyone saying he was rushed or bothered by their request. And although he never was a huge star and never even had a "hit" record, that was just fine with him. He appreciated what he had. He even wrote a song about that as well. "How Lucky" (can one man get). I will miss him forever.

He was a warm funny man, always looking at the human condition with a sideways quirky smile. He could be sarcastic, but was never mean, and he could come up with the most amazing lyrics. Example - "Whiskey and pain/Both taste the same/During the time they go down," but there are so many other phrases he could turn that would stop you in your tracks. Saw him live about a half dozen times. Always a great heartwarming show.

An amazing songwriter that to me was the everymans man. His sense of humor and the way he engaged audiences live always blew me away. Thankfully I got to see him a year or so before he checked out but he still had it. Probably saw him 7or8 times in total but I always walked out of his shows with a smile and feeling great...if you listen to his song Paradise it will give you a huge window into the soul of JP.

I love John Prine! He was an amazing songwriter and an incredible guitarist. Some of his best most famous songs are Angel from Montgomery, Paradise, Sam Stone, and one of my favorites Dear Abby. But the first time i ever heard him was a song called Grandpa Was a Carpenter. His music could be classified as American Folk, country if you stretch the wrapper very thin. Angel from Montgomery was a big song for Bonnie Raitt. There have been a few who recorded Paradise but i only ever heard him do Dear Abby.

@@debjorgo His second album charted 148th in the Billboard top 200 and the main criticism at the time was that it wasn't quite as brilliant as his debut album. His third album, Sweet Revenge, features as its cover image John in the car he bought with the earning from his first two albums. So while its true Diamonds in the Rough didn't receive the acclaim of his self-titles debut album, it charted about as well as his next five albums and better than the seven after those.

I loved the Prime Prine Greatest Hits album and listened to it for a long time, Sweet Revenge always being a favorite. I've since picked up the first album, Sweet Revenge and the Great Days Prine Anthology album. I remember reading somewhere that the lines from Sweet Revenge "Through rock and through stone, the black wind still moans" had to do with the railroad cutting through the old west and the 'black wind' taking revenge ever so often by killing a worker. I can't find the quote now. Do you know anything on that. The lines about "white meat and black meat" has me stumped too.

'Paradise' is one of John's best known songs. It's about the destruction of the environment by mining. He sings about the Green River, part of John's ashes were scattered in the Green River. "Hello in There" is about the loneliness of old age. "Angel From Montgomery' is about finding the meaning of life. John, a brilliant songwriter, he can make you laugh, cry or both at the same time. I recommend you check out more Prine, you won't be disappointed.

I have been a John Prine fan 50 years, fortnate to see hm twice prior to his death. He was an incredible songwriter who wrote many songs till days bfore his death, covered by great artist including "Angel From Montgomery" for Bonnie Raitt. She and John were great freinds for life and played together often and shared many mutual feelings on imortant issues. This last year, Bonnie won the Grammy for "best song of the year" for her recently written tune called"Just in Time", one of several for her. She said in her acceptance speech she was thinking about John when she wrote it. When I heard her song, considered their relationship and the fact she was thinking of him and his unfortunate death when she wrote"Just In Time", "Please Don't Bury" me came to my mind immiedetely. Both songs are each artists rendition of important factor dear to both of their hearts: Before you die, become an organ donater. You should lsten to "Just in Time" and check out her version of the same task of donating your organs.
