Awesome John! Alan used to tell me play all these rudimental so;os with the sticks but the fastest way to improve was to play the same lesson with brushes !

I got recently John’s Alan Dawson and Art Blakey drum books and would love to study with him. I wonder if he teachers private students. I’m in upstate NY so I guess I would have to drive to Boston which I wouldn’t mind. I know a lot of teachers do the Skype lessons which I’ve never done but frankly I would prefer being in the same room with the teacher so they could tell me what I’m doing wrong.

Hello there, what´s the advantage playing with a brush instead of a stick? Regards from Portugal.

Luis Pedro Martins I think brushes are typically used for lower volume musical situations and can produce a sweeping, legato sound where as sticks can only be staccato unless playing a closed roll. also, brushes are more difficult to achieve rebound on doubles and rolls. check out Clayton Cameron, Jeff Hamilton, Ed Thigpen, Alan Dawson, Steve Smith, and more. hope that helps!

I don't understand the short long, play the line part in the 4 way coordination. What does he mean by play the line, to play constant triplets with that limb?
@larrytate1657
@larrytate1657 8 жыл бұрын
I see, never mind I think I figured it out. .play the syncopated notes on tops and fill every other note in with another limb.

Just one question, how do you differentiate the short notes from the long? They all just look the same. Is it up to me to decide which are which?
