Christie lived at Rillington place where he would go on to take the lives of women who visited him, his wife would also become a victim.
Timothy Evans and his wife lived in the top flat, the case against Evans would play a part in the abolishment of capital punishment in the U.K

I remember watching 10 Rillington Place as a kid back in 1971 and thinking what a repulsive man Christie was. Later I came to admire how well Attenbourough had played the part. THEN I discover that Christie was my grandfathers cousin (on my mothers side). One of my cousins, again on my mothers side, has been researching the family tree. After detailing the Christie branch, she started another branch which led to a point where a relative married into the Sutliffe family in Halifax. She didn't bother going any further down that branch !!!

Christie was a cruel, repellant man with no redeeming qualities. When he was led to the gallows, he complained his nose itched. Alfie Pierrepont wryly remarked: "I can assure you, it won't bother you for long." 10 Rillington Place captures Christie in his true, sleazy grift. Richard Attenborough was utterly brilliant as this odious serial killer.

True story: One of my great uncles was arrested on the suspicion of being Christie, on that day that the man himself was arrested in London. The Met were given a description of Christie and were told to apprehend anyone who looked like him, and that happened to my Great Uncle! To be fair, the poor sod did look like him... Anyway, they carted him off to the station, quite roughly, he always said, and he was there for a while until a relative could come and conclusively prove he wasn't Christie. Not much of a story, but there it is. Be lucky!

I knew Christie had been in prison before but I didn't realise he had been to prison that many times. I had a friend in Ladbroke Grove and in 1970 he took me to Rillington place that was still standing before the whole road was demolished number 10 was at the end of the road on the left all the houses were unoccupied and you could enter the houses, it was a slum all brown inside with torn linoleum on the floors and bare floorboards in some rooms. I suppose a lot of people had been in there taking souvenirs, after they pulled the street down it was renamed Ruston close and the council parked the dustcarts there, years later the council built new houses on the road and renamed it again Bartle road.

What a shocking story. Just shows how easy an out of control person with a history of abusing women continued to get away with his bizarre crimes and just put the evidence all around him, walls, floor, garden outside. For the cops to miss all of this and poor Mr. Evans hanging is a tragedy. I wonder how many people back in those times of weak forensics and sloppy police work have gotten away with murder and are either still living or someone else took the rap. Nice job narrating this story June. I'm glad i have found the Juniverse :). MT

@@suerichardson4381 I'm not too sure here Remember Christie was hanged for the murder of his wife only, just like Haig was hanged for the murder of Mrs Durant Deacon even though he had killed at least 7 others ,the Crown took the case the could prove ,admitting by the Crown of a mistake would be as the Chief Justice in the Birmingham Six case it would be an Appalling Vista ,Evans did not murder his wife or child in my opinion, and yes he should have had a full pardon.

My late father Norman Rae reported on the case as chief crime reporter of the news of the world. A hungry Christie had phoned my father to arrange a breakfast meet and give a story . At the rendezvous a police man patrolling scared him off. He was arrested the next day. Norman never got that story but got many more that convicted murderers to the hangman . On my father’s untimely death in 1962 was about to write his memoir. How fascinating that would have been.x

Mm when the excellent Richard Attenborough film came out, I briefly visited the Rillington Place location. It had been renamed Ruston Close, because otherwise no one would live there. And the cul de sac street was in fact then behind a closed off barrier and the entire row was about to be demolished. The area there now has been completley redeveloped and it is unlikely that anyone now living in the area would be aware of the notoriety.

The yellow fog was everywhere even got into homes. Older people died easier but crime skyrocketed because police could not even drive or patrop Because of no visibility often. I know nothing of Christie and choose not to, but I am a lifetime Yorkshire man and hence am familiar with a type(very few in Leeds are or ever were as Harry Enfield et al portray) elsewhere in the region more of them conform to the stereotype ..coming from the pennine area he would likely not be as Richard Attenborough not tim Roth played him. Their depiction is the usual stereotype of the northern mass murderer.christie as a one time policeman and scout would not be the sinister, chilling ,reticent type ,,not from Halifax. Both were fine performances but inaccurate ,as was the ludicrous depiction of another northerner,Alan Bennett, as woefully effeminate ,in lady in the van....just more lazy ignorant assumptions of our metropolitan boys and girls...whose own acting pretensions are blown away by real life performers from the north and America..
