I had only seen him in serious roles before seeing step brothers (Gangs of New York and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape). Most people didn’t know him before step brothers, but he’s had a long history of serious roles.

So great that a uniquely American art form is saved from extinction. 'Church and porch tunes' is about the best description I've ever heard for these simple three chord songs - which, for all their lack of sophistication, capture a melancholy representative of the era from which they stem. They deserve to be performed live like this and not just exist as scratchy Lomax recordings in the Library of Congress. Brilliant work NPR - and hats off to John Reilly and Friends for keeping the fire burning.

Totally agree. I love the Renaissance gifts some people have, and have tried to do my best to develop those vestigial ones I have in me. Being ultra talented is a little like being a real-life "mutant". Hat's off to Mr. Reilly.

John C Reilly has such a sweet voice, while speaking too, but especially while singing. I have been a fan of his acting for years but only just heard him sing for the first time on Dijon's, "The Stranger," with Tobias Jesso Jr. & others. So very warm & sensitive, reminds me of my grandpa before he got sick, though I didn't hear him sing very much, to my sadness.

What they fail to remember is that these songs were written by Christians as prayers. They are not just nice old songs. Jesus was the intended subject of praise. No offense to John C. Reilly, but who is the female vocalist who thinks she can change the intended meaning. She didn't write the songs... All in all though, this is really great music and you guys do it justice. Thank you for not letting it die in the pages of history.

Love the shout out to Jesus and the Christian faith even if it was just them saying “hey liberals don’t be mad we’re singing songs about Jesus we really don’t believe or mean it!” 👍🏻🤦🏻‍♂️ You might come to wish you meant it one of these days. I’ll keep listening to your lovely covers of faith filled tunes and maybe even throw a prayer up to the big man for ya you just keep spreading the good word for the rest of us God fearing folk. 😁
