Fantastic interview. Met him during a Blockbuster Picasso opening at Gagosian opening a decade back. On mentioning I’d once done a popular cable TV play about Picasso his face lit up & he responded with warmth & had caught the moment on video.

If John Richardson thought American art historians’ writings ‘incomprehensible’ then I feel justified in feeling that myself. He found them narcissists, only admiring themselves, rather than the artworks they were discussing.

So dead on about dealers. There are two on KZbin from Sotheby’s, one saying Francis was “raised in a Catholic family” (Francis himself said “I was raised a rabid Protestant”) and another calling his Furies the Eumenides (they are the Erinyes, the retributive pursuers, at the end of the Oresteia they transform into the Eumenides- “the Kindly Ones.”). Shoddy for organizations hawking these things like hot dogs for tens of millions. As for the “scholar” - they’re are so politically correct now the sentiment goes double for them. Solid chap, zero pretension, a man you want to talk with over a couple bottles of wine. Sadly we lost him last year. ,
