John knows more about South African rugby history than 99% of SA rugby supporters. Today was about Ireland, but I can promise you that he can have the same conversation and recollection about SA players. He made the decision to settle in South Africa in the eighties and is a very proud South African today. I have huge respect for the man. Not only as a great nr 9 in his days, or his in depth rugby knowledge, or his incredible general knowledge, but just as a plain don-to-earth person that can hold his conversation at any level and always treats people with the utmost respect. He is just a symbol of what a good human being should be.

Great stuff lads. John Robbie brought back many treasured memories to me. The first international I attended was that 6-5 win by the AB’s. I was also there when Barry McGann missed that conversion. On the 1971 Lions, my outstanding memory is my dad calling me at 3.30 am to listen to the fourth and drawn test on the radio. Happy days. There was an interview with the late Colin Meads afterwards in which he called out Mike Gibson’s defence over the four tests as the biggest difference maker. Coming back to the present time, I just wish that Johnny Sexton hadn’t been so petulant in his comments. Likewise, Peter O’Mahoney in NZ. Never give your opponent an axe to grind. On the Haka, it is interesting that Irelands first win over the AB’s was when the Irish team stood in the figure 8 to commemorate the late Anthony Foley, while the Kiwis were doing it and it showed in the faces of the AB players to be causing some pause for thought. That day when I attended my first match in Dublin they did it off the pitch in front of the Wanderers pavilion. It was a curiosity rather than anything major in those days. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

Good response to the bomb squad criticism, MW. Very unconvincing argument by John Robbie. All teams have to make tactical decisions - and we play to our strengths which includes our depth.

Even John's memory doesn't go back as far as Jack Kyle. My mother was a massive fan of Irish Rugby (and Irish sport in general - she was the first woman to become the President of ANY Lawn Tennis Association anywhere in the world, in 1982). But although tennis was her greatest passion, her passion for rugby could not be overstated. The one and only time in my entire life that I heard her swear was when we were watching Ireland v Wales on the TV, Cliff Morgan commentating. Gibson made a break wide on the right and chipped it over the advancing JPR, whereupon JPR committed the most cynical, blatant bodycheck on the unfortunate Gibson. No red cards in those days... Anyway, back to Kyle. My mother knew her rugby, and having seen both Kyle and Gibson (she was there at Ravenhill in Belfast when Ireland won their first ever Grand Slam in the 40's), she would give the accolade of Ireland's best to Jack Kyle. There is little footage of those days, but I trust her judgement. Anyway, it's great to hear these stories from great games from the past.

Ireland should have approached the WC focusing on game for game not thinking that they will be in the final automatically before it even happened. Misplaced arrogance at it's best. They deserved it!!!!

That's the most idiotic post I've seen in a long time. They is no way in the world they took NZ lightly in the '23 RWC. It was an incredibly close game, we lost. We've sucked it up. Clearly you have some axe to grind. Let it go, mate. Two big teams will go at it tomorrow, and, more than likely, it will be incredibly close again. But neither team will be going into the game with arrogance. From the Irish, I'm guessing, confidence, with respect. From NZ, the same. Now, stop waffling about the mindset of the Irish team, when you (like me), have no idea what happens and what is said away from the cameras.

Not sure if you are NZ or SA, but generally NZ carry this air of confidence and belief, but SA are the most arrogant team who seem to think they should win every game, Ireland is in new territory in challenging the big two and going in to games as favourites, so it's a novelty and adapting to the player and game management, but there is absolutely no arrogance in Ireland, yes, SA have 4 WCs, we get it, but player depth is the key reason for that, Ireland have arelatively small player pool and unfortunately tend to lose key players at key moments.

the rugby world cup finds the world cup winner. Not the worlds best team. It is not the right format or layout to find the worlds best team.

Even as an Irishman, I have to disagree. The only single tournament where all the top teams compete is the WC. Ireland have repeatedly come up short. Being number 1 in the rankings is small beer in comparison to winning the WC. How would you find the world's best team? Have a little ceremony at the end of the year based on the rankings? Get real, for goodness sake.

@RossoVerdeNero im not saying the world cup isnt worth anything. Its a great achievement. But the tournament is not a good format to find the worlds best. Cut out all minnow teams and run a series wuth the top 6 would be better.
