I am in the rabit hole of sugar addiction and everything I have read, studied and talked to Dr's about has confirmed that sugar is an addiction. Rats were put in a maze with heroine on one end and sugar on the other.. The rats went directly to the sugar and the behaviour afterwards showed a high. Our medical professionals need to pay attention to this. Sugar is the number one killer because it encompasses everything from heart failure to cancers. Brain scans done on people with sugar addiction mirrored the exact same chemistry as being on heroine as well.

I would say avoid as much processed sugars as you can, try to find some sweet fruits so you get that taste, but it’s something that’s better for you than something with way too much sugar than the average human should be consuming.
@jeanetten.s.8557

Not at all a professional so take it with a grain of salt. But a method that came to mind is by exploring different types of sweet such as bittersweet, sour sweet, savory sweet and slowly diverge from there(this is if you are addicted to that sweet taste itself). But if you are addicted to the high of sugar rush itself, then instead of actively pulling your focus away from something then maybe try "Substituting" those pleasures with something else, in moderation of course, such as exercise, cooking or even games! Specifically simple games with easy repetitive tasks. Such as candy crush or sudoku, flappy birds, tetris and temple run. Something repetitive that demands your attention and distracts you even for just another moment. Again! I am not at all a professional! Ive just read a lot of psychology papers while I was depressed (in an attempt to reprogram my own brain to fucking stop) and this is a technique I use to kick my bad habit of cutting (nothing deep or dangerous, just enough to hurt) and addiction is just another really bad habit isnt it? (that may be a bit oversimplified but i find keeping things simple sometimes help from it becoming overwhelming)

As someone that is currently sober and trying to stay that way, this episode was really moving to me. As a nurse, I know some things lol But it was nice to hear her speak about addicts as actual human beings; instead of just "junkies" or "bad" people. I lost a lot of loved ones to addiction and they were not just pieces of crap. So thank you for this.

All read Gabor Mate, and seek mental health from someone who is less science dogmatic, you'll end with neuroleptics and fat ass without dietary advice, iow more self-esteem issues, isolation. Science, emphaty, knowledge, insight, poly perspective , and you might get actual help. I feel science has gone to the money....overall there should be awareness and healthy non- judgemental sceptical additude to many aspects in authorities in science. Science as science is pure, humans notvso much... Sucks. Have great day, even slightly esoteric :-)

Best BBT Kripke scene was the sports “battle” over an empty office, since that was the one thing he and Sheldon agreed was their one weakness. Sheldon and Barry tried and failed to play basketball, and then tried to dunk using a trampoline. Kripke hitting the trampoline and flying off camera while yelling, “howwwaaa!” was hilarious.

I’ve suffered with food addiction most of my life. What I didn’t realise until recently was that the quantity and choice of food that I was putting into my body was causing me to be anxious and depressed. By becoming anxious and depressed I was eating more to compensate the low mood. By removing the junk food and sugar from my diet I have started to finally have that sober feeling. The numb feeling that I had is starting to fade. I have become more in touch with reality and actually feel things when I am around my family. The hardest parts are when I want to escape reality I will turn to food and repeat the cycle again. Staying sober from food is hard but being in the addiction cycle is a thousand times worse. Be creative in finding things that will help you to be happy and enjoy being in reality. My biggest focus is that my family experience a better me when I am in touch with reality and therefore it improves their mood and mental health. “Smile and the world smiles with you”

First part of the podcast, I was just in awe on how Mayim passionately explains the neurophysiology of addiction! And I love how open John Ross Bowie was with his life, and the vulnerability he has shown. And Mayim’s right, “it’s not necessarily important that we understand all of the intricacies of how and why it’s more important to say if you were an addict, if you were an alcoholic, if you were struggling with your dependence on something, YOU’RE NOT ALONE... There are those among us who can help”. I love how you two always emphasize this. Thank you for a wonderful podcast.

Watching every episode is like Sheldon offering a hot beverage to me; warm and comforting. Every character has its own nuance and quirks, but what makes them better is their friendship. There are just so many things to love here. I appreciate the "breakdowns" in plain English and I also am enjoying the heck out of getting to know the guests, as well as Mayim, a little better. I think when we see people on the big and little screens all the time, it's easy to loose sight of the their dimensions and the fact that they're actual humans. John Ross Bowie, in particular, was a treat to get to know a bit about after embracing him as Kripke for so many years. I love his humor, honesty and vulnerability, and this episode (like most of them so far) left me wanting more. Well done all around!

Once again another great podcast/vlog. My grandfather was an Alcoholic, and my mother would tell us kids that she hoped we would never start drinking because she feared it could turn into alcoholism us as well. I did drink some in college but really didn’t like the way it made me feel, plus I could remember my grandfather and never really seeing him sober. I’ll be 53 at the end of this month and I don’t drink except for the occasional glass of wine or a hot toddy for a cold.

This all makes intuitive sense to me the way you talk about addiction. I'm lucky (?) I had a relatively easy time getting off crystal meth because I only used for a couple years. I don't remember the "pain" of withdrawal but I certainly remember the absolutely insane lengths I went to trying to find more every time I tried to quit. I wish I knew the secret key answer of what made me finally stop looking 18 months sober now.

I have to say, when you're homeless but on meth, you don't worry so much about where you're going to sleep. When you run out of meth and you're still homeless, suddenly a 24 hour survival cycle on the street consumed all my attention. I was broke and unsheltered and suddenly required sleep. I had to really hit rock bottom, whereas I thought I already had before I got homeless.

I have a graduate degree in addiction and I appreciate SO MUCH that you said it's not about meeting diagnostic criteria. You can be abusing a substance without being an addict as well, which can also be incredibly detrimental. Relying strictly on criteria is also challenging when many people being treated for addiction are not forthcoming about their actual consumption and counselors have to decipher from various information what is mostly like each patient's most realistic use patterns. Also, detoxing is not as simple as the general population likes to believe. The impact it has on the body can be so extreme in some case where people can die if they aren't monitored.

I am a huge empath and I could feel the emotion throughout this entire episode. Especially at the end when Mayim was talking about how emotional it was for her, it brought tears to my eyes. I don't have a lot of experience with alcoholism or addiction but it is definitely something I've been curious about. It was so interesting to hear about how our minds interact on a loop with dopamine and all the other brain stuff Mayim shared. I truly learned so much about this topic today and my heart has been opened because of it. Thank you, Mayim, for sharing your knowledge with the world. Thank you John Ross Bowie for sharing your experiences and giving us all an insight to alcoholism and what that looked like for you. This talk was awesome! I'm 10 years sober. I related a bunch and learned a bunch! To anyone like me who struggles with addiction and isn't religious, believe them when they say in the 12 step programs that " it's spiritual, not religious". You will have your Bible thumpers wherever you go but your higher power can be anything outside of and greater than yourself. The people in the rooms, the rooms themselves, even the door knob to the rooms if you want. I know I wouldn't have compared myself favorably to a door knob when I first got sober. Good luck, you can do it, and it's worth it!

Thank you for this episode. You are, as always, informative and caring. John’s stories, his openness and honesty brought tears to my eyes. He is a beautiful soul and I am grateful that you shared him with us.

As always, thank you for this episode. Thank you, John Ross Bowie for being very open, you have a generous heart! I loved how I was taken back for a little while to Physiology classes when Dr. Mayim began to explain the neuro-anatomy of it all 💖 Can’t wait for the next!! ✨

Thank you so much for this episode - and this series. I am fascinated by the correlation between depression (mental health) and addiction -> self-medication. You're helping me understand so much more what people are doing, and what I do and maybe why I am so against drugs. The connection to control and loss of control would interest me immensely, because the fear of that is why I keep away from all these things.

This was such an amazing interview!!! I really fell in love with John Ross Bowie when he played the father of a child with special needs because I was one and my mother introduced me to the show and LOVED it because she related to it so well. I love him even more now. I'm in love with an addict, struggling to get sober, and I have already recommended this episode to him.

I could listen to both of you sharing your thoughts endlessly. I'm a child of an alcoholic & it was interesting to hear how it affects others. I recognized some of my reactions to others in John's comments. Thank you.

Mayim, you are so versatile that you can adapt to whatever you wish to accomplish! I admire you immensely. Thanks for this. I love this series so much. You are amazing, and since the first episode, I've been able to finally relate, as I've been unable until now to vocalize the kind of anxiety I deal with every day. It makes it easier knowing I'm not alone. I'm a victim of violent domestic abuse (yes, I'm a man, it can happen) on top of being ostracized from my family after coming out. Thank you for doing this.
