I also like a deep watering in a bucket. Helps to get the soil tension out. I try to do it every so often when I see my soil pulling away from the side of the pot.

I have a black hose, and the water in there is literally too hot for me to touch for longer than a second, and I used to work in a kitchen for years, I have a pretty high tolerance for heat on my hands. If I went straight to the roots with water that hot I can TOTALLY see the plant getting damaged by the heat.

John can also get the dechor/ Chorimide remover from his aquarium shop to help him out. SeaChem is concentrated & goes a long way.

I use mopani wood in my aquariums all the time. The tannins are great for fish health! I still have my very first piece I bought in the mid 1980s! I never would have thought to use it for Bonsai! It's very sought after here! Difficult to find now and extremely expensive when you do! What a great collection John has! Thanks for taking us with you Nigel! Thanks for allowing us John!
