My friend, John, asked me to turn him a bowl from a glue up of walnut, ash and cherry. I glued up a blank and asked John to come by the shop and try his hand a turning his bowl. We had a good day and a lot of fun working on this project. John was very happy with the completed project. Questions and comments are always welcome. I hope you enjoy the video!

Chef Jon has good taste in music and access to GarageBand. It was a loop called Buddy in GB that I extended and use in some of my videos. It's a catchy little tune. Thanks for the comment. Take care, Steve

Richard - If you have some scrap pieces of wood and a lathe you can make this bowl. Give it a go! Thanks for watching and for the comments. Take care, Steve

A sprinkle of table salt also works well to prevent glue slide.

You're absolutely correct Susan and I've used it in the past. This was a hefty glue up so I decided to use the dowels. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Take care, Steve

So I’m guessing you put a glue block on there in beginning for chuck right? I’m new at turning and trying to learn new things
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 5 жыл бұрын
Tracy - I didn't use a glue block. I turned a tenon on the the bottom of the piece before I flipped it on the lathe. I used the 4 jaw chuck to hold the bowl while the hollowing out the inside. I then turned away the tenon and put a small foot on the piece. You can see the small tenon at 12:16 in the video. Thanks for watching and for commenting on my video. Take care, Steve

Any reason that you did not alternate the grain and do something like plywood? I think it would make the turning easier so you don't hit long grain and quarter grain consistently. In a solid wood bowl you can't help it but if you have the option to make a more stable blank that is also easier to turn why not go for it?
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Since this was a requested piece from John he selected the wood. I thought about alternating the grain but decided just to have it all going in the same direction. I agree plywood is stable but I don't believe it would have been appropriate for this piece. Overall it was no harder to turn that a solid bowl blank. Thanks again for the comment. Take care, Steve

Very nice bowl. What was the last oil you put on it and is it food safe.

Thank you very much! The finish for this bowl was a product called Arm-R-Seal from General finishes. I put a link to this product below. I wouldn't consider this finish as food safe. This bowl was for display only so the finish didn't need to be food safe. To make the bowl food safe I would have used a salad bowl finish or mineral oil. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
