I'm from the Westside of Chicago, I'm 38 and I saw the Bulls play live at the Old Chicago Stadium and the UC. Pippen is arguably the most skilled player of all-time. From 1990 to 1998 he was the best two-way player at his position. He was the most defensively dominating SF that ever played the game and when he retired and it wasn't even close. He revolutionized his position and was the prototype for the modern point-forward. T-Mac, KD, Kawhi, LeBron, Grant Hill, Paul George, etc. That's Scottie. Now let's look at those players. The only one who can defend like Scottie is Kawhi but Kahwi can't handle the ball and make plays like Pippen. LeBron can make plays and handle the ball like Scottie but he still was never the defender Pippen was. I don't think people understand how dominant it is to average 20 points, 6 boards and 6 dimes with a two steals and block. Pippen during his era was the only SF to ever lead the NBA with steals. Some years he was damn near averaging 3 steals a game!!! Kahwi is the best defender in today's game but he could defend quite like Scottie. The only other players to be able to defend like Pippen were his teammates: Rodman and Jordan. Add the fact Pippen could get you 6 or 7 dimes a game, 8 boards and 20+ points and we are talking about a player who besides Jordan and Hakeem was the best two-way player in the NBA from 1989 until 1999. Jordan never won without Pippen and vice versa so let's stop reducing Scottie to just being Robin like he was a sidekick and just along for Jordan's ride. It's super disrespectful and Pippen is just a country boy from Arkansas so he's super duper humble but Scottie Pippen not only was #2 behind MJ but during those Championship runs he arguably was the secondd best player in the NBA after MJ because he was dominant and had a style conducive to winning. Scottie Pippen has an all-star MVP and 6 rings!!!!! Salley is not blowing smoke. Now personally I think in terms of overall skills on both ends and being able to play and defend multiple positions and put makrs in the most check mark's in a box score Pippen definitely could do it all in terms of intangibles conducive to winning. In today's game he would totally have a similar impact to a guy who reminds me of him which is Giannis who is obviously bigger but of similar build and playing style.

Jordan is the GOAT. But I hate how most people try to look over the fact he had one of the best supporting cast in nba history. Pippen, Rodman, Harper, Kerr, Longley. Kukoc,etc. That's a couple HOF players. Give them their credit also
@jcsjay5 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely true. They were good at their roles but to name Longley and Kerr as a great supporting cast is a bit of a stretch. Rodman and Harpers best years were pre-Bulls so to say that he had Hall of Famers is kinda disingenuous. That's like saying LeBron had Shaq, D-Rose, Rashard Lewis, Lance Stephenson, Javele McGee etc. None of those guys were in their prime. Jordan had a good supporting cast within a system that allowed players to do their job. So you're right, def give them credit but drop the "of all time". Let's not hyperbolize their worth.

I think they were both good on fundamentals. I think Jordan was slightly more athletic than Pippen, which helped him shine, especially in clutch situations. Jordan was able to pull off amazing acrobatic, trick shots that Pippen simply would not attempt. Jordan was more of an entertainer than Pippen was. Jordan not only wanted to win, he wanted to look good doing it. I don't think Pippen cared much HOW they got the win, as long as they got it.

I agree with John S. about Scottie and John strikes me as very thoughtful and intelligent. You can find players that in a certain aspect/part of basketball are better than Scottie but in terms of the overall package when you factor in all of the different skill sets, he is just the one that has it all. Scottie cannot be #1 in any single category because his game requires him to be doing everything at all times for the team. This is why it has taken 30 years or so to completely start appreciating what he brought to the NBA but it is finally happening.

@TheRealist 811 I 💯% agree! Each generation contributes something that the next generation uses. But only a small amount of players actually take what the previous generation did, and go to the next level. Oscar Robertson is always left out of these conversations. But his work in the union, changed how players got paid. Dr. J initiated basketballs popularity. Magic/bird created parity, which creates interest. Mike took that, along with amazing marketing from the league, and made the league global and also showed the power the players INDIVIDUALLY have. Then lebron took that and spread that knowledge and power to the players in the league. Along with showing them how to create platforms through social media, and becoming "bosses", not just players. But i believe Dr.J was so influential because he showed the NBA AND players, how to handle the extreme spotlight, and still remain professional and grounded. That was the face the NBA needed. So that created a Mike Jordan who knew how to navigate the spotlight. Then Lebron saw that, listened and followed the cues, and begin doing that in high school. And if you ever saw lebron in his early years (in high school), he sounded like a professional even then. But like i mentioned before, there's only a small few who understand how to navigate and capitalize inn that environment. That's why i hate ignorant fools who only pay attention to media narratives, and act like everything started with Jordan. It does bother me. But i realize 85% of people are sheep. And only know what the Shepard's tell them are important

Great points by Salley. He makes sense, I would add the difference is in the light of quality versus quantity. I interpret Salley as saying that Pippen had a greater range of skills, the ability to guard positions 1 thru 5, play the point, facilitate the offense and still score 20 plus. So with that perceptive we can also say Jordan's depth of skills were greater than Pippen. Jordan's offensive skills and overall Offensive Bag to score and deter the opponents defense can be posed as greater than Pippen. Pippen might be more skilled in overall abilities on the basketball court but Jordan's mastery of the same skills look to be more defined or developed.

Jordan was CHOSEN to be marketed as the face of the sport. The league chooses a face of the sport based on what they think would be most entertaining to most people.

Fast Kash but he’s not more skilled either. The only thing you can debate is Pippen was a better defender. But I’m still picking MJ in that too. Scottie was a good player and all time great defender but clowns like John Salley try to boost him up to diminish MJ.

The funniest part is he says go to KZbin. Bruh, I seen almost every bulls televised game & i can go back & watch KZbin. 2 different levels of players. Scottie was good but not even close to MJ level offensively. Defense he was close because he guarded MJ in practice
@blkshuzlive84565 жыл бұрын
Your logic is so inconsistent...you try to give Jordan credit for Scottie's defensive skill by saying he had to play against Jordan in practice but wouldnt that be the same for Scotties offensive skills that he had to play against Jordan in practice?
@drizzejohnson57675 жыл бұрын
BLKSHUZ LIVE no sir MJ won defensive player of the year before Scottie. Nothing inconsistent in my points. It took Scottie 3-4 years to develop into a top 10-20 player in the league. How do I know? I watched the games

I think sally is coming from a players perspective. I remember when mj and pippin were older players, and younger players were entering the league. The sports media would point out that pippin was most often quoted as the player most other players wanted to play like. It has to do with all the things he did so well. Mj was great at everything, but his focus was on scoring, getting his teammates to play well, creating turnovers, taking over games when needed, and winning championships. Mj could do most of what pippin did and do it at another level, but he had a different role. Both a clearly great players. But, as much as I love pippin, no way was he more skilled than mj. Mj just had a different role.
@marticehasty28375 жыл бұрын
Sally is crazy. What set MJ apart from everyone else, including Pip, was how fundamentally flawless his game was. That was the base of his game, that Dean Smith school of basketball. The footwork, no wasted movement, ball fakes, head fakes, using screens, slipping screens, etc. Then, add in his work ethic...and mental toughness...AND athletic ability as a cherry on top. That’s why he’s the greatest.
@simeonwashington4991 Жыл бұрын
He always says he’s the greatest. But Pippen figured all that out plus the three ball and predictive passing at a random DII school and came into the league demanding he play how he wants and no other way. Pip just getting his credit.
@marticehasty2837 Жыл бұрын
@@simeonwashington4991 pippen was a great player. Champion. Top 50 team. Hall of Famer etc etc. Jordan himself has repeatedly gave pip his props. What more credit does he want? Because, respectfully, he ain’t Jordan. And that’s no knock on him at all.

The there only a few players that can be considered The GOAT if you are knowledgeable, objective, and a true fan of the Game of Basketball. The GOATs: Bill Russell, Kareem, Wilt, Big O, Dr. J, Magic, MJ, LeBron, Shaq, Bird, Jerry West, Kobe, Elgin Baylor, Tim Duncan. If you are not a hater, and can effectively say why the player is not The GOAT, without putting down one player to uplift the other, then do so. Otherwise you will not have problem with any player, I listed here that all have a claim to the name "GOAT". The Key is they are the GOAT for different reasons then others there stats, impact on the game, accolades prove that. *Debates should be based on facts, stats, and context. but I know that subjectivity plays it part in these debates. But it should be very small part. 1 loss, missed shot, or bad performance doesn't define a legacy or greatness. WATCH THIS VIDEO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ame1pqd4icpgl9U Explains it all. MJ is not the GOAT to many Legends, former players, especially his contemporaries. It's not hate it's analyst of the game based on there experience, accomplishments, and influence on the game.
